ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

The Office of King County Councilmember Sarah Perry is seeking a passionate Data & Communications Intern looking to grow their experience in data-informed public interest communication! As an intern, you will support the compilation and analysis of our annual District 3 public opinion survey. Data work will primarily involve data transcription and entry, data cleaning, basic descriptive analysis that can be completed in Excel, and most importantly, translating analysis into accessible visual insights for the public. Coding experience is not necessary to succeed in this role. You will also support the drafting, revision, and design of other public-facing communications via social media, email newsletter, and text.

Councilmember Sarah Perry represents King County Council District 3, including 75,000 unincorporated residents, as well as residents in the cities and surrounding areas of Issaquah, Sammamish, Redmond, Woodinville, Bothell, Duvall, Carnation, Fall City, Preston, Snoqualmie, North Bend, Snoqualmie Pass, Stevens Pass, and Skykomish.

ABOUT THE KING COUNTY COUNCIL

The Metropolitan King County Council oversees the most populous county in Washington State. With over 2.25 million residents, King County is the 13th largest county in the United States. King County provides an array of regional services, including public health, Metro transit, wastewater treatment, solid waste, community and human services, and criminal justice and is the local government for the roughly 250,000 people living in unincorporated areas of the County.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Prepare, compile, and sort hard-copy survey documents for data entry into online survey platform, verifying and correcting data where necessary
  • Analyze public opinion survey results using foundational statistical methodologies
  • Translate data insights into accessible, visual forms for public consumption
  • Create social media posts for Councilmember’s Facebook and Instagram using information and media as directed by the Communications Manager
  • Support Communications Manager with drafting and sending the monthly newsletter, constituent email communications, and text message campaigns
  • Create design and marketing materials for posts, updates, and mailers to be shared with community members
  • Attend meetings/events in the community with Councilmember Perry and staff, gathering information and photos that can be used for communication materials
  • College student, recent graduate, or candidate with comparable experience
  • Foundational knowledge in survey methodology and statistical analysis
  • Experience with accurate and efficient data entry/transcription
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, particularly formulas and functions used for compiling, cleaning, and analyzing datasets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and understanding of audience
  • Ability to complete work on a timeline while maintaining accuracy and quality
  • Passion for and desire to build knowledge of local government and grow skills in public interest communications/public relations
  • Availability to work a hybrid schedule of 12 to 15 hours/week, with a preference for in-office work on Mondays, Tuesdays, and/or Wednesdays

This position is non-exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible. This position is not represented. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

ANTICIPATED TIME COMMITMENT AND SUPERVISION: 12 to 15 hours per week for 6 months, beginning in January 2027. Work will be done both in the office (King County Courthouse in Seattle) and remotely, along with attending events/meetings with the Councilmember. The intern will report directly to District 3 Communications & Community Engagement Manager, Isabel Smith, and will work closely with the rest of the team.
