Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by providing support to customers, physicians, and staff of Mercy Medical Center. The Nurse Manager will assure the coordination, integration, facilitation, and provision of cost-effective, high-quality patient care, within an assigned area, consistent with the strategic priorities and mission of Mercy Medical Center.

Job Description

Job Duties

  • Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome
  • Ensures high quality and safe patient care using evidence-based practice, performance improvement, and service excellence.
  • Identifies quality improvement opportunities based on quality metrics.
  • Manages customer complaints in a timely and caring manner.
  • Evaluates Press-Ganey or Internal Customer Survey scores at least quarterly, as applicable.
  • Implements strategies to assure physician satisfaction.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings.
  • Develops and/or maintains accurate job descriptions and performance standards for all job classifications within the department.
  • Develops and utilizes a formal plan to recognize outstanding individuals or teams in their department.
  • Implements key initiatives and demonstrates performance improvement within the department.
  • Provides for mechanisms to measure, analyze and manage variation in the performance of defined processes.
  • Practices cost containment efforts on a shift to shift basis by efficient use of time and resources, i.e., man-hours, patient charges, equipment, supplies.
  • Prepares or provides input to preliminary Capital, FTE and Operating budgets for department/unit by due date.
  • Leads and/or participates in department, service line and/or organization-wide problem-solving, re-design or new program projects or performance improvement teams, committees and councils.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary, collaborative relationships within the service and the institution as a whole.
  • Monitors and maintains unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting and hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personal safety as evidenced during both mock and actual surveys.
  • Demonstrates competency and assists others in computer navigation to access and find needed information effectively and efficiently.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job- specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.


Department Specific Duties

Behavioral Health Unit

  • Promotes Evidenced Based Best Practice related to Mental Health and Chemical Dependency in the Department and throughout Mercy Medical Center.
  • Represents Behavioral Health and Mercy Medical Center on a county, regional, and state level as required related to Mental Health Reform, Delivery and Access of services, and serves on Performance Improvement initiatives as required.
  • Provides expert leadership in development of policies and protocols related to Behavioral Health and psychiatric emergency management on a department and organizational level.

Birthplace

  • Creates a culture of interdisciplinary cooperation and communication by motivating staff to continuously improve performance. 
  • Participates in staff development. 
  • Serves as positive role model and mentor for department and hospital staff, establishing and reinforcing expectations of cooperation, collaboration, and respect. 
  • Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary staff to ensure best patient care practices and satisfaction. 
  • Facilitates employee relations between all departments in Women and Children’s Services.
  • Performs management and patient care functions consistent with the Nurse Manager Job Description.
  • Develops and provides staff education, skills labs, drills and simulations related to the patient population.
  • Manages time and attendance for staff.
  • Manages Midas variances and identifies trending and improvement opportunities.
  • Participates in improvement projects for Women and Children’s Services departments.
  • Manages operations and resources of Birthplace C-Section suite.
  • Ensures efficient use of resources in daily operations.

Cardiac-Stroke Center

  • Demonstrates solid knowledge base of National Institute of Health Stroke Scale stroke scale, intravenous cardiac medications, post cardiac cath and pacemaker patients,
  • Demonstrates solid knowledge base of cardiac and neurology patient populations.
  • Demonstrates solid knowledge base of patient’s Electrocardiogram rhythms

Emergency Department

  • Oversees the Trauma Coordinator and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program Coordinators to ensure successful program implementation.
  • Coordinates with Medical Director of LCEM to foster relationships, oversight of department operations, and strategic planning.
  • Provides oversight for Main Emergency Department as well as Hiawatha and Marion Emergency Departments.

Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

  • Monitors electrocardiograms initiated upon admission and continued until transferred of discharged unless otherwise ordered by a physician.
  • Monitors Invasive Hemodynamic (Swan Ganz catheters, arterial lines, CVP).
  • Assesses Neurologic Monitoring (noninvasive) & Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring.
  • Manages Mechanical Ventilation/BiPap/High flow Nasal cannula etc.
  • Administers Medications including continuous infusion of vasoactives drugs for hemodynamic regulation & narcotics for pain management.
  • Performs venipuncture of peripheral vessels to obtain ordered lab tests. Registered nurses will draw arterial blood gasses.
  • Manages Codes & Dysrhythmias including use of Zoll pacer, Medtronic Defib.
  • Monitors Intra-Abdominal Pressure.
  • Manages Care of high risk patients; STEMI, STROKE, Hypothermia, etc…
  • Acts as Charge Nurse and, when oriented, will function independently in the Code/Met role for the Medical Center.
  • Monitors and coordinates with house supervisor staffing levels, schedules, and daily maintenance and fills staffing gaps as needed.
  • Communicates with OR management and surgeons regularly to address and assess needs or issues relating to surgical patients.
  • Manages Care of medical and surgical critically ill patients.
  • Monitors Invasive Hemodynamic (Swan Ganz catheters, arterial lines, CVP, ICP, etc.).
  • Manages Mechanical Ventilation/BiPap/High flow Nasal cannula etc.
  • Manages Codes & Dysrhythmias.
  • Attends Code Blues/Met calls if needed.
  • Performs 12 lead EKGs if needed.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

  • Serves as positive role model and mentor for department and hospital staff, establishing and reinforcing expectations of cooperation, collaboration, and respect. 
  • Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary staff to ensure best patient care practices and satisfaction. 
  • Facilitates employee relations between all departments in Women and Children’s Services.
  • Performs management and patient care functions consistent with the Nurse Manager Job Description.
  • Develops and provides staff education, skills labs, drills and simulations related to the patient population.
  • Manages time and attendance for staff.
  • Manages Midas variances and identifies trending and improvement opportunities.
  • Participates in improvement projects for Women and Children’s Services departments.
  • Manages operations and resources of Birthplace C-Section suite.
  • Ensures efficient use of resources in daily operations.

OR

  • Effectively run the day-to-day surgical schedule board
  • Provide mentoring for the clinician leadership team
  • Assist in local anesthetic cases and monitor patients as needed for staffing

Pediatric Unit

  • Oversees all areas of the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care units.
  • Performs management and patient care functions consistent with the Nurse Manager Job Description.
  • Develops and provides staff education, skills labs, drills and simulations related to the Pediatric and Neonatal population.
  • Manages time and attendance for staff.
  • Manages Midas variances and identifies trending and improvement opportunities.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

  • Monitors and coordinates with house supervisor staffing levels, schedules, and daily maintenance and fills staffing gaps as needed.
  • Manages care of critically ill patients including cardiac and neurological surgical patients.
  • Communicates with OR management and surgeons regularly to address and assess needs or issues relating to surgical patients.

Professional Experience

  • Three years clinical experience required.
  • Two years management or leadership experience years preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Birthplace - Equivalent experience in lieu of BSN degree may be considered.
  • MICU - Conscious Sedation within six months of hire.
  • MICU - Complete training on IABP, CRRT and Impella.
  • SICU - Conscious Sedation within six months of hire.
  • SICU - Expected to complete training on IABP and CRRT.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Currently licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa or compact state required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.  Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date. 
  • Cardiac-Stroke Center - Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support will be required within six months of hire if not current.
  • ICU - Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support will be required within six months of hire if not current.
