The Master Mechanic is responsible for advanced mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of tunneling equipment, including tunnel boring machines (TBMs), mucking machines, conveyors, ventilation systems, and other heavy machinery used in underground construction. This role requires an experienced technician with strong mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic expertise, as well as a keen ability to quickly diagnose and resolve issues to ensure continuous operation in the challenging tunneling environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex diagnostics, maintenance, and repair work on a variety of tunneling equipment such as TBMs, mucking systems, conveyor belts, hydraulic pumps, and ventilation systems.

  • Work closely with engineers and project managers to ensure mechanical systems are operating within design parameters and are optimized for the specific demands of the project.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repairs, including parts used, hours worked, and equipment status. Provide detailed reports on equipment issues, solutions, and operational performance to supervisors and project managers.
  • Monitor the availability of spare parts and tools, ensuring critical components are always on hand. Help order parts as needed and manage tools and resources efficiently.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior mechanics, helping them to develop their technical skills and ensuring that work meets the company’s standards for quality and safety.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED (required); additional technical training or certification in mechanical systems, industrial maintenance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, with a focus on tunneling or heavy construction equipment.
  • Strong experience working with tunnel boring machines (TBMs), hydraulic systems, conveyor systems, and other specialized tunneling equipment.
  • Proven track record of diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical and electrical issues in an underground construction environment.
