Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I/II

I: Under direct supervision, monitors wastewater treatment plant processes; performs routine laboratory tests, and a variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks, including making repairs and adjustments to equipment in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; and performs related duties as assigned.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I:

• Graduation from high school or G.E.D.; AND
• One (1) year experience in semiskilled construction work, equipment maintenance, industrial plant or process operation and/or industrial plant maintenance.
• Possession of an Operator-in-Training Certificate Grade I (or higher), issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) must be obtained prior to expiration of the six (6) month probationary period. 
• Must pass the examination for Grade I Certificate administered by the SWRCB no later than one (1) year after date of hire.
• Incumbents are required to obtain a Grade II Certificate (or higher), no later than two (2) years after attaining the Grade I Certificate.
• Possession of a valid Class “C” California driver's license required

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II, in addition to the above, must possess:

• Required experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants necessary to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II Certificate’ AND
• Possession of a valid Grade II Operator’s Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board; AND
• Incumbents are required to obtain a Grade III Certificate (or higher), no later than three (3) years after attaining the Grade II Certificate

August 18, 2026 (Tentative) 

An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.  

NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination.
