About the Department

Mental Health Services is a part of Student Wellness within Campus and Student Life. MHS provides mental health care for students eligible students. Mental health services include diagnostic assessments, emergency services, crisis intervention, individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy, medication management, academic skills counseling, and referral services. MHS staff provides consultation to University faculty, staff, and administrators who have concerns about a student. In its care for students, MHS employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians and supports a psychology training program and a psychiatry resident training rotation site.


Job Summary

Provides routine and emergent psychiatric care to University of Chicago students under the supervision of a collaborating physician. Consults with multidisciplinary Mental Health Services (MHS) and Student Wellness (SW) staff, in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to identify and manage mental health problems.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations; prescribes psychiatric medications as indicated; orders and interprets laboratory studies as indicated; provides psychiatric follow-up care.
  • Follows SW policies and procedures consistent with state mental health statues, ethical guidelines, best practices, HIPAA, and FERPA.
  • Maintains a collaborative consultation relationship with and reports to the SW Chief Psychiatrist.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation for all clinical interactions and consultations.
  • Participates in routine workday call rotation.
  • Provides formal and informal consultation to MHS clinical staff and trainees.
  • Attends and participates in multi-disciplinary case conferences and psychiatric staff meetings.
  • Provides campus-based services and consultation to internal and external constituents, which may necessitate being on campus in the evening or over the weekend.
  • Participates in MHS peer review and quality improvement activities.
  • Serves on MHS committees as assigned.
  • Actively pursues required knowledge and skills for professional development.
  • Has a solid understanding about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, or herbal remedies.
  • Analyzes test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and training in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in nursing (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing.
  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing appropriate as a Nurse Practitioner and certified in area of specialty.

Experience:

  • Two years of clinical experience in area of specialty.
  • Experience in a university counseling center or with young adults treating mood, anxiety, and adjustment disorders, and providing couple’s counseling and crisis management.

Certifications:

  • Current advanced practice nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Current registered nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Current Board Certification for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or eligibility to receive by start date.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medications.
  • Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laws and ethical principles related to the practice of psychiatry in a university setting.
  • Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through UCM Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skill.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a wide array of presenting problems and an affinity for working in a multidisciplinary team.

Working Conditions

  • Privileged and credentialed through UCM Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
