Job Summary:

The Marine Estimator is responsible for preparing labor and material estimates for assigned projects, creating detailed cost estimates for various ship and boat repair contracts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for estimates including but not limited to preparing bid documents, schedules, reviewing all project documents, and work plans.
  • Manage multiple proposals simultaneously while meeting stringent schedule requirements.
  • Ensuring estimates are accurate, reasonable, and completed in a timely manner. 
  • Estimating labor and material costs while assuring that they are used efficiently. 
  • Ensuring estimates are accurate and reasonable. 
  • Monitoring estimates and actual expenditures to identify weak points, problem areas and mitigating risks. 
  • Qualifying vendors and ensuring they meet the contractual requirements.
  • Solicit and evaluate price quotations from subcontractors, and account for any exceptions made. 
  • Submit inquiries to customers as required, for clarification of requirements. 
  • Determine long lead time material and potential impacts to schedule as needed. 
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Must be highly organized with the ability to monitor numerous projects.
  • Must be dependable, detail oriented, with a high level of integrity. 
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related programs.
  • Must be able to learn other accounting software systems. 
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate well with technical subjects.

Education and/or Experience:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field with 3+ years of experience or a High School Diploma and 3 years of related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of ship repair procedures, requirements, terminology, and government contracts.
  • A strong understanding of U.S. Navy Standard Items, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rules and their differences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to estimate navy small boats, commercial boats, and large yachts. 
  • Ability to interpret drawings, technical data, and specifications to determine material and equipment requirements. 
  • Ability to maintain confidential and meticulous records. 
  • Ability to take directions and follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Ability to work on a variety of assignments on a daily or hourly basis.
  • Strong ability to be dependable, and work as a team.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Language Ability:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English. 

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job are medium/heavy in nature. 

  • The physical demands of this position are light to moderate. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, as well as the use of hands, fingers, and the ability to hear and talk. 
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at times.  
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
