Job Summary

Pediatric Primary Care at MGH Boston and the Charlestown Health Center is seeking a nurse to work at both locations.

The current opening is a permanent, benefitted position offering 26 hours per week. The schedule consists primarily of two 8-hour shifts at our Charlestown Health Center Pediatric Primary Care Clinic and One 10-hour shift at Pediatric Primary Care at 165 Cambridge Street, Boston (2 blocks from MGH). It also includes a weekend/holiday rotation in pediatric urgent care at 165 Cambridge Street, Boston.

This position requires location flexibility, as floating between 165 Cambridge Street and the Charlestown Health Center is part of the role to cover sick calls/vacations.

The staff nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate, individualized, nursing care for pediatric patients and their families in the ambulatory care setting.
They collaborate with practice leadership, members of the patient care team, and the patient to achieve optimal patient outcomes.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Provides competent, compassionate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process.

-Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families.

-Articulates the professional nursing role to the patient, family and health team members.

-Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to / from other patient care team members.

-Coordinates involvement of the patient, family and health team members in patient care plan including patient and family teaching.

-Provides nursing care appropriate to age group of patients.

-Observes, reports, and documents relevant patient information.

-Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients.

-Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patientcare services in a cost-effective way.

-Participates in and contributes to performance improvement activities.

-Collaborates with other professional and non-professional personnel in maintaining recognized standards.

-Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary staff members.

-Teaches and directs nursing and other clinical support staff for whom she / he is responsible.

-Appropriately utilizes nursing resources.

-Interprets hospital and departmental policies and procedures to nurses and other health team members.

-Participates in daily activities conducive to the comfort and safety of patients / their families and practice staff.

-Appropriately utilizes equipment and supplies.

-Provides input to the practice leadership regarding practice needs.

-Participates in practice and other committees for formulation of nursing, practice and hospital policies and procedures.

-Engages in the MIIS vaccine program as a primary or backup coordinator when needed.

Professional Development:

-Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education practice.

-Collaborates with practice leadership to identify his / her developmental level of practice and appropriate learning experiences to enhance development.

-Adheres to Department of Nursing requirements for training as specified in the MGH Nursing Practice Manual.

-Contributes to relevant committees, professional meetings, continuing educational and / or formal academic programs.

-Our Pediatric Primary Care Dept has two locations. One at Main campus MGH and one at the Charlestown Health Center. Ability to work at both sites is required. Occasional weekend and holiday rotation for Pedi Urgent Care clinic. Week to week scheduling days can vary.

Summary
Accountable for interpreting the plan of medical care, assessment of patients' clinical decision-making regarding nursing care, assuring nursing care is provided in a safe and competent manner, providing individualized nursing care, and evaluating nursing care for groups of patients.

Essential Functions
-Maintain accurate, detailed reports, and records.

-Administer medications to patients and monitor patients for reactions or side effects.

-Record patients' medical information and vital signs.

-Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients' conditions.

-Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans.

-Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions.


 

Qualifications

Education
Associate's Degree Nursing required or Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred

Licenses and Credentials
Registered Nurse [RN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required

Experience
Clinical nursing experience 0-1 year required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-Familiarity with the principles and skills needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment.
-Knowledgeable of the care required by respective age groups for which care is being provided.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and secure sensitive information.
-Knowledge of medical terminology.
-Excellent verbal and communication skills.
-Ability to accurately screen and triage acute patients.
