Overview

Harvesters, a regional food bank serving a 27-county area across northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Philanthropy. Driven by its mission to mobilize the power of the community to create equitable access to nutritious food and address the root causes and impact of hunger, Harvesters works toward a vision of a healthy, thriving community where no one is hungry. The organization is committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where employees, volunteers, partners, and clients are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Philanthropy serves as a key member of the Resource Development leadership team, leading Harvesters' comprehensive fundraising strategy and overseeing all philanthropic programs. This role provides leadership for annual giving, major gifts, foundation relations, planned giving, events, and corporate partnerships while partnering closely with organizational leaders, donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders to advance Harvesters' fundraising goals and mission. This role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote).

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of philanthropy professionals responsible for annual giving, major gifts, grants management, events, planned giving, and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Develop and implement annual and multi-year fundraising plans, goals, and strategies in partnership with the Chief Development Officer.
  • Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors through cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and recognition activities.
  • Identify and implement innovative fundraising approaches to increase philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and government entities.
  • Provide strategic leadership for annual giving, major gifts, corporate partnerships, foundation relations, planned giving, special events, cause marketing, and third-party fundraising programs.
  • Partner with Resource Development leadership to strengthen Harvesters' brand and enhance relationships with community stakeholders and partners.
  • Oversee fundraising operations, including donor data management, reporting, donor communications, processes, and procedures.
  • Develop and manage the philanthropy budget and ensure effective stewardship of organizational resources.
  • Serve as staff liaison to Board resource development committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Monitor fundraising performance and evaluate strategies to drive sustainable revenue growth and donor engagement.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive fundraising experience, including demonstrated success securing philanthropic support and achieving ambitious revenue goals.
  • Proven leadership experience managing and developing fundraising teams, with at least 8 years of supervisory responsibility and increasing levels of accountability.
  • Demonstrated success leading comprehensive fundraising programs, including major gifts, annual giving, foundation relations, planned giving, events, and donor stewardship.
  • Strong relationship-building, solicitation, and donor engagement skills, with the ability to cultivate support from diverse constituencies.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop high-performing fundraising professionals.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with fundraising CRM systems and donor databases preferred. Experience with Raiser's Edge is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the regional philanthropic community is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or a related field required.
