Southwest Airlines Meteorology primarily supports stakeholders in Network Operations Control (NOC) and our stations. On a day-to-day basis, the Meteorology Team works with NOC and other operational Leaders to help manage weather risk to Southwest’s network in order to better serve our Customers and fellow operational Employees. Meteorology provides significant value in the decision-making process for all weather events that impact Southwest Airlines.
In this internship, you will be expected to develop forecasting and communication techniques and apply these techniques in several different environments. This internship ends with Interns giving the Daily Briefings to Department Leaders and other key Stakeholders. Internship projects will be assigned based on business needs and Intern skillset.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Meteorology Intern may include, but are not limited to:
- Learn work responsibilities of operational meteorologists
- Write plain-language forecasts and TAFs for Stations
- Assist with weather information collection for research purposes
- Assist with weather case study analyses
- Become familiar with weather application software
- Assist with data collection and organization for producing and distributing weather related content through various communication channels.
- Supports timely communication and updates related to meteorological initiatives to operational stakeholders
- Ability to work with all levels of the NOC, from the frontline Employees to the Department Vice President
- Ability to present to department Leadership
- Give daily operational briefings toward end of Internship
- Perform some research projects
- May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills, Work Style & Abilities:
- Must work well with others as part of a Team
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, including Senior Leaders, and subject matter experts
- Able to express ideas clearly in documents that have organization, structure, grammar, language, and terminology adjusted to the characteristics and need of the audience
- Self-motivated with ability to perform with little or no direction
- Must be able to handle multiple situations simultaneously with strong attention to detail
- Customer Service oriented
- Flexibility to work in a dynamic, fast-paced operational environment
Time Commitment and Pay:
- Required: Full-time 40hrs a week
- Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day
- Program Dates: May 18 – August 6, 2027
- $21-24 per hour corresponding with progress toward degree completion
- Stipends may be offered based on eligibility and program criteria

Education:
- Progress towards a degree, major in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science required
- Progress towards a 4-year undergraduate degree
- To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by your university) at the time of application and during the internship
- At least 3 semesters remaining at the time the internship ends is preferred
- Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application
Basic Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process
Experience:
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint required
- A passion/interest in Meteorology required
- Ability to read METAR/TAFS required
- Completed coursework in synoptic and mesoscale meteorology preferred
- Completed coursework in forecasting preferred
- Completed coursework in public speaking preferred
- Programming experience or coursework preferred
- A passion/interest in Aviation preferred
