Description

Are you a civil, traffic or environmental engineering student looking to gain real-world experience in Public Works Engineering? The City of Tustin’s Public Works Department is seeking two motivated, enthusiastic, and eager-to-learn individuals to join our Engineering Division as Engineering Interns. This year-round internship is an excellent opportunity to contribute to public infrastructure projects from conception to completion and gain hands-on experience in the field. Under direct supervision, the Engineering Interns will perform a variety of entry-level engineering tasks to support the design and construction phase of projects.

To be considered, applicants are required to submit either a web-generated unofficial transcript or a scanned copy of an official transcript.

Given that this is a part-time, at-will, non-benefitted position, hours will be limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Hours worked may vary significantly from week to week.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The ideal candidate is a current student pursuing a degree in Civil, Traffic/Transportation, or Environmental Engineering, or a recent graduate in one of these fields, who is eager to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world municipal engineering environment. Strong candidates will demonstrate initiative, curiosity, sound problem-solving and communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.

The successful candidate will be interested in gaining hands-on experience with public infrastructure projects through a variety of assignments that may include engineering research and analysis, field inspections, GIS mapping, preparation of drawings and estimates, development and permit review, and construction-related activities. An interest in public service and a desire to understand how engineering projects move through the project life cycle, from planning and design through construction and completion, are highly desirable.

WHY TUSTIN ENGINEERING?

While much of Orange County is largely built out, Tustin offers a unique combination of new development, redevelopment, established infrastructure, and a municipally operated water system. This gives Engineering Interns the opportunity to gain exposure to a broad range of municipal engineering work within a single agency. As a full-service city, Tustin’s engineering team is delivering projects that are shaping the community’s future. From transportation and pedestrian improvements to water, storm drain, roadway, park, and public facility projects, interns can gain insight into the diverse infrastructure needs of both established neighborhoods, including Old Town, and the growing Tustin Legacy community.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

Application materials will be carefully reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Candidates who are determined by subject matter experts to be the best qualified for the vacancies will be invited to complete a one-way video interview. Finalists will participate in departmental interviews. Dates are tentative and may change if necessary.

All candidates who pass the interviews will earn placement on the eligible list, which is valid for one (1) year and may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification.

This recruitment is conducted on a continuous basis to meet the needs of the City as vacancies occur and may close at any time. Applications will be formally reviewed approximately every two (2) to three (3) weeks, beginning November 2. Dates are tentative and may change if necessary. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply promptly.

As a part-time Engineering Intern, incumbents will perform a wide variety of duties. Examples of these duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist with data research, including streets, storm drains, sewers, water systems, and park improvements.

• Assist customers at the permit counter as needed; assist in calculating plan check and development feeds; manage the encroachment permit process governing all use of the public right-of-way, and monitor status of plan check review packages.

• Travel to project sites and locations throughout the City to perform field inspections and surveys.

• Conduct research, collect data and perform engineering calculations.

• Prepare maps using the City’s Geographic Information System.

• Assist in the preparation of engineering drawings and estimates.

• Assist with the construction management of projects under the City’s capital improvement program.

• Assist in the preparation and distribution of reports and other documents.

• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

A combination of education, experience, and training that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for entry into the classification.  A typical combination includes:

Education and/or Experience:

Graduation from high school. Enrollment in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program with major coursework in Civil, Traffic and/or Environmental Engineering, or a field related to the area of assignment (or completion of such degree within the past three years) is highly desirable.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

Special Requirements:

Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination and administrative screening.
