Job Description
About the team
Every item Nordstrom sells passes through a receiving dock before it reaches a customer. The Building Technology Inbound team builds and runs the applications that make that happen. Our portfolio of services supports receiving across Nordstrom's Supply Chain facilities, keeping inventory flowing accurately and quickly from the moment it arrives. When our systems work, product reaches stores and customers faster. When they don't, the effects show up on the dock floor within minutes, so the work has real, visible impact.
We work in a modern stack (Kafka, Spring Boot, Postgres, AWS, Kubernetes) and use AI-assisted development, including Claude Code, as part of how we build.
About the role
As an Engineer 1, you'll join an experienced team and take on well-scoped work across our inbound application portfolio. You'll write, test, and ship production code, learn how a warehouse really operates, and grow quickly with support from senior engineers and an engineering manager invested in your development.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and maintain Java/Spring Boot services and REST APIs that support receiving operations
- Develop event-driven integrations using Kafka
- Write and optimize queries and schemas in Postgres
- Deploy and operate containerized services on Kubernetes and AWS
- Write automated tests and contribute to CI/CD pipelines
- Participate in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback
- Participate in a week-long on-call shift that rotates among team members, helping troubleshoot and resolve production issues (with support from senior engineers as you ramp up)
- Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code to accelerate development, while owning the quality of what you ship
- Partner with product, operations, and other engineering teams to turn operational needs into working software
What we're looking for
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Professional software engineering experience (internships and substantial project work count)
- Working knowledge of Java or a similar object-oriented language
- Understanding of REST API design and general web service concepts
- Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
- Solid fundamentals: data structures, testing, version control (Git)
- Clear communication and a habit of asking good questions
Nice to have
- Exposure to Spring Boot, Kafka, or other messaging and streaming systems
- Exposure to Kubernetes and containerization (e.g., Docker), or experience with AWS or other cloud platforms
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Copilot, etc.)
- Supply chain, warehouse, or logistics experience, such as WMS, receiving, inventory, or fulfillment. This is a real advantage, but we'll teach you the domain if you bring curiosity.
What success looks like
- First 90 days: You've shipped production changes, understand how receiving flows through our systems, and can navigate our services and tooling independently.
- First year: You own features end to end, contribute meaningfully to operational stability, and are a trusted teammate on the team.
Why join us
You'll work on systems where software meets the physical world, with a team that values craftsmanship, learning, and sensible use of AI tooling. Nordstrom offers a strong legacy, a supportive culture, and room to grow.
