Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This position will serve as a Transportation Worker II in the role of Sign Erector for the Division 3 Traffic Services unit. The position will be supervised by Traffic Services, located in Castle Hayne, but will report to and have an area of responsibility in Sampson County. The work will involve manual labor and equipment operation related to the installation and maintenance of traffic signs along roadways within Division 3. The employee will perform sign maintenance on all routes within the assigned area. In addition to general sign maintenance, duties will include installing traffic control measures, such as setting detours and road closures, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. The position requires working in various weather conditions and high-traffic areas and will be subject to emergency callback, requiring work during non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency.
The successful candidate must be able to report to work at the scheduled time and work effectively as part of a team. The position requires the ability to read, write, and act upon verbal and written instructions, as well as plan and organize daily work activities. The employee will be responsible for maintaining daily records and reports of all activities within the assigned area. The position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, traverse rough and uneven terrain, and perform climbing and bending. The employee must be able to operate state vehicles and heavy-duty trucks used in signing operations and perform inspections to ensure equipment is properly serviced and maintained.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position.
Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:
• No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years
• No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
• Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
• If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.

Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in the installation of roadway signs
- Experience operating a sign truck with attachments
- Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
- Experience in Basic Incident Response
- Knowledge of maintaining the Sign Inventory
Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience of Requirement:
