Position Summary
This position supports production, installation, and strike for our immersive nighttime events (Glow at the Gardens, Blossoms of Light, and Trail of Lights). In addition, this position supports setup and teardown of other public events at both York Street and Chatfield Farms and may support AV operations for private events (weddings, celebrations of life, organizational galas, etc.) booked at our York Street location, as well as inventory storage and management.
We are compiling a call list for a variety of disciplines: electrics, sound engineering, carpentry, scenic painting, and prop making.
This position is an on call/project position that requires a flexible schedule. Shifts may occur during daytime, evening, or weekend hours, primarily outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Demand for these positions varies from season to season, with the heaviest concentration of hours offered from June-November, and again in January. Shifts will be offered via a call list as they become available.
Requirements
General Duties and Responsibilities (varies depending on the type of technician and shift)
- For production shifts: completes assigned production work, which may include building props/scenic elements, scenic painting, preparation of lighting/sound equipment for installation, and maintaining existing décor, equipment, and materials.
- For installation and strike shifts: installs or strikes lighting, sound, décor, scenic elements, and equipment for Glow at the Gardens, Blossoms of Light, and Trail of Lights.
- For event shifts: Stage, set, or teardown equipment for various public events.
- For storage shifts: Facilitate equipment transfers between storage locations and support inventory processes.
- For AV operation shifts: sets up and operates basic speaker/sound board packages booked by private event clients
- Regular attendance at the worksite is required.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (varies depending on the type of technician)
- Knowledge and skills in at least one of the following disciplines: electrics, sound engineering, carpentry, scenic painting, prop making.
- Comfortable operating ladders, electric pallet jacks, golf carts, power tools, etc.
- Knowledge of electrical systems for lighting and sound installations.
- Must have strong Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to read/interpret diagrams.
- Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Must be able to complete highly physical labor multiple days in a row outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Must be physically able to work on hands and knees, as well as at heights from ladders.
- May be asked to wear a respirator on painting days.
- Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
- Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
- Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans, when necessary, throughout the day.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
- Ability to work overtime as necessary.
- Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
- Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
- Must be committed to working safely at all times.
Experience/Education:
- High school diploma / GED and/or combination of education and equivalent experience is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in theatrical production (lighting, sound, carpentry, painting, prop-making) is required.
Travel:
Up to 25% travel required. Requires the ability to travel to remote locations (or other Garden locations) where environment may vary significantly.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Work requires physical efforts associated with using the computer and phones to access information.
