Job Description

Financial Crimes Overview

RBC Financial Crimes is an enterprise-wide function that is responsible for protecting RBC, its clients and the financial system from risks including money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions evasion. The function establishes and executes programs, controls and processes designed to identify, assess, mitigate, detect and report financial crime risk, while supporting compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements across the jurisdictions in which RBC operates.

RBC’s Financial Crimes program is comprised of several specialized teams, each with their own distinct mandate including Case Management, Financial Intelligence Unit, High Risk Client Management, Global Economic Sanctions, among others.

The roles offered through this posting are part of the Case Management program, an AML function that plays an important role in assessing, escalating and reporting potential financial crime risk. Much of Case Management’s work begins early in the detection and review process.  RBC uses a variety of detection models and methods to identify patterns, behaviors and typologies that may indicate the presence of financial crime risk. These indicators generate alerts that require human review and analysis, which leads to the valuable purpose of these positions.

A role within Case Management offers the opportunity to build valuable investigative and analytical skills, gain exposure to a dynamic and evolving area of banking, and contribute to meaningful work that supports RBC’s commitment to effectively managing risk and meeting its regulatory obligations.

Canadian AML Alert Analysis Team (CAMLAAT)

The CAMLAAT provides a triage function within Case Management, serving as the first point of human intervention in assessing potential money laundering (ML) or terrorism financing (TF) risks. This team reviews flagged clients for unusual activity indicative of ML/TF, and the Co-op student supports this process by completing various essential activities to ensure thorough risk evaluation.

What will you do?

  • Support CAMLAAT in conducting risk-based reviews of Transaction Monitoring (TRM) and Unusual Transaction Report (UTR) alerts in the Personal and Commercial banking, Private Banking, Dominion Securities, Direct Investing, and Investor Services business units.
  • Participate in training sessions and enhance knowledge of AML regulations and best practices.
  • Collaborate with team members on various AML projects and initiatives.
  • Continuously innovate by exploring new tools, technologies, and improved processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Currently enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Leadership acumen and a passion to apply it in a dynamic business environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and highly developed communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Creative and analytical thinker who is self-driven.
  • Strong MS Office skills – Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

AML Investigation Support (AMLIS)

The AML Investigation Support Team (AMLIST) plays an important role in the execution of numerous workflows within RBC’s AML FIU by:

  • Planning, conducting, and completing risk based investigations into matters escalated to the Team, through the gathering, analysis, and evaluation of relevant information in order to determine whether sufficient suspicion exists of money laundering, financing of terrorism, or other criminal activities, to justify making a report to the Regulatory Authority for the purpose of complying with legislative/regulatory requirements, and mitigating risk to RBC in line with established organizational policy.
  • Conducting end-to-end investigations from the case referral review to the filing of STRs to FINTRAC for applicable scenarios and typologies.
  • Reviewing case escalations and/or Transaction Monitoring (TRM) alerts to assess the client activity against a pre-determined risk appetite and determines if the case/alert warrants further AML Investigation, Cease & Desist letters, Account Closure or Demarket while documenting the approach accordingly.

What will you do?

  • Plan, conduct, and complete risk-based investigations into relevant matters referred to the Team, in line with approved processes, including but not limited to those originating from:
    • Referrals from internal partners including RBC’s Canadian AML Alert Analysis (CAMLAA) and AML Investigations Teams,
    • Rules and reports generated by RBC’s Risk Strategy & Analytics (RS&A) Team.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the STR Assisted Processing (STRAP) tool by identifying typologies, testing new transaction types, and providing feedback to relevant internal partners.
  • Conduct end-to-end investigations from the case referral review to the filing of STRs to FINTRAC for typologies specific to the AMLIST as part of applicable Assisted STR-related workflows.
  • Gather information/intelligence from all available sources to determine whether sufficient suspicion of money laundering, financing of terrorism or other criminal activities exists.
  • Ensure all appropriate steps are taken as part of the investigation, including but not limited to presenting clients for risk review if outside of RBC’s risk appetite, and completing referrals to other groups within RBC’s Financial Crimes such as Global Economic Sanctions and Major Financial Crimes.
  • Ensure cases contain sufficient documentation and rationale for escalation or closure to support initial triage of the activity and mitigate risk to RBC.
  • Advise/escalate to Senior Manager any trends or issues and take action to propose improvements to workflow, processes and tools.

Global Adverse Media (GAM) Team

The Global Adverse Media (GAM) team plays an important role in helping protect RBC and mitigate financial crime risk. The team reviews adverse media alerts potentially involving RBC clients to determine whether the individual or entity is a true match, and where applicable, assesses the significance of the adverse event to determine whether further investigation is warranted.

What will you do?

  • Review adverse media alerts and conduct research to determine whether individuals or entities identified in the media match the RBC client
  • Analyze negative news and adverse events through a financial crime risk lens, considering the nature, severity and relevance of the information
  • Use internal systems and open-source research to gather information and support investigative decisions
  • Develop clear, well supported and risk-based rationales documenting your findings and decisions
  • Identify matters requiring further investigation and refer them to the appropriate High-Risk Client or Financial Intelligence teams
  • Build practical knowledge of financial crime risk, investigative techniques and risk-based decision making
  • Work alongside a team of individuals that value teamwork, curiosity, critical thinking and different perspectives
  • Gain exposure to a diverse range of business lines and client segments – from personal banking to wealth management to large corporate entities – across the broad geographic footprint in which RBC operates.
  • Seek out opportunities to enhance workflows, increase efficiency and strengthen the overall effectiveness of the program

What do you need to succeed?

  • Ability to interpret a variety of news events, understand their context and conduct effective research to obtain additional relevant information, when necessary
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn, ask questions and take on new challenges
  • Able to positively contribute to a supportive and inclusive team culture

What’s in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • Network and build lasting relationships with students and co-workers from diverse backgrounds from across Canada.
  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and learning opportunities.
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive and highly performing team.
  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact.
  • Enjoy a comfortable hybrid work environment with the option to dress casually.
