Internship: Electrical Engineering

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineering Intern supports the design, testing, and documentation of electrical controls for Mixer Systems’ batching, mixing, and material handling equipment. Working under the guidance of the Electrical Engineering Manager and other team members, the intern gains hands-on experience with electrical drawings, control panels, PLC and HMI applications, and equipment testing.

The intern works with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Service to learn how controls projects move from design through assembly and testing. Assignments will be matched to the intern’s coursework, skills, and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Assist with creating and updating electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, and bills of materials.
• Support PLC and HMI programming, modifications, and testing under the guidance of an engineer.
• Assist with control panel inspections, I/O checks, and functional testing before equipment shipment.
• Help identify and document electrical or controls issues found during assembly and testing.
• Research electrical and controls components, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, motor controls, and sensors.
• Update drawings, programs, parts lists, and other engineering documentation to reflect approved changes.
• Work with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Service to understand project requirements and resolve questions.
• Observe and assist with troubleshooting and equipment startup activities as appropriate to the intern’s training.
• Help develop or improve standard drawings, documentation, and testing procedures.
• Participate in project meetings and provide updates on assigned work.
• Follow company safety procedures when working in manufacturing and testing areas.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Coursework or foundational knowledge in electrical circuits, controls, automation, or a related area.
• Ability to read and learn to interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn engineering software and tools.
• Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to follow technical and safety instructions.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with employees across departments.
• English proficiency, both verbal and written, to communicate effectively with employees, vendors, and customers as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework or project experience involving PLC programming, HMI development, motor controls, or industrial automation.
• Familiarity with Allen-Bradley Logix 500, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View Studio, or comparable software.
• Experience with CAD software used for electrical schematics or panel design.
• Hands-on experience with electrical wiring, control panels, testing equipment, or student engineering projects.
• Interest in industrial equipment, manufacturing, batching, mixing, or material handling systems.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in office, manufacturing, and equipment testing areas.
• The intern will use computers and engineering software and may work near electrical panels and industrial machinery.
• Manufacturing areas may include noise, dust, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
• Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with company safety procedures are required in designated areas.
• Schedule is typically Monday through Friday during standard business hours, with flexibility based on project needs and academic requirements.

• Occasionally lift or carry up to 40 pounds.
• Read electrical drawings, component labels, and computer screens, and distinguish wiring colors.
• Communicate in person, by telephone, and through virtual meetings.

• Learn to interpret drawings, control sequences, test results, and technical documentation.
• Follow instructions, ask questions, and recognize when an issue needs an engineer’s review.
• Keep accurate records of assigned work and test results.
• Manage assigned tasks and meet agreed-upon deadlines.
• Adapt to changing project priorities and feedback while working with others.
