Job Summary

The Assistant Manager of the Laboratory is a site-specific leadership role responsible for supporting daily laboratory operations, ensuring quality and compliance, and leading staff to deliver accurate and timely diagnostic services. This role partners closely with the Regional Laboratory Manager to implement system-wide strategies while tailoring execution to local site needs. The position directly impacts patient care by maintaining operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and a high-performing team environment.


Job Functions

  • *Oversees daily laboratory operations at the assigned site, ensuring workflow efficiency, turnaround times, and adherence to quality standards while maintaining alignment with regional and organizational goals.
  • *Supervises, coaches, and supports laboratory staff, including scheduling, performance management, and professional development to ensure a competent and engaged workforce.
  • *Ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA, state regulations), actively participating in inspections, audits, and corrective action plans.
  • *Collaborates with the Regional Laboratory Manager to implement policies, procedures, and system-wide initiatives while addressing site-specific operational needs.
  • *Monitors quality assurance indicators, investigates variances, and drives continuous improvement initiatives to enhance accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
  • *Coordinates staffing resources and workload distribution to maintain appropriate coverage and operational continuity across shifts.
  • *Serves as a key point of contact for providers, nursing staff, and other stakeholders to resolve issues, improve service delivery, and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • *Supports financial stewardship by managing supply utilization, assisting with budget adherence, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • *Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork, ensuring adherence to infection control and workplace safety standards.
  • *Performs additional duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and organizational priorities.

Education / Experience Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field with 3-5 years of progressive laboratory experience, including supervisory or lead experience; or
  • Equivalent Experience: 7+ years of laboratory experience with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/MT) or equivalent (ASCP or recognized certifying body).

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in a multi-site or health system laboratory environment.
  • Previous experience supporting regulatory inspections (CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission).
  • Leadership or management training/certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the laboratory for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to work in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological materials, chemicals, and temperature variations, with appropriate PPE.
  • Must be able to operate laboratory equipment and computer systems, with or without reasonable accommodation
