Your impact on the team
As a Lead Mobile Engineer on Sharpen, you will provide technical leadership for a team building one of McGraw Hillʼs most innovative and fast-growing products: a multi-platform learning experience spanning native mobile apps and AI-enabled learning capabilities. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will help shape mobile architecture, strengthen engineering practices, mentor developers, and ensure the delivery of reliable, scalable, user-centered experiences for learners.
This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.
What You'll Do:
- Lead the design, development, and delivery of high-quality native mobile experiences for iOS and Android.
- Define and drive technical direction for mobile architecture, performance, reliability, accessibility, and maintainability.
- Mentor and support mobile engineers through code reviews, design discussions, pairing, and technical coaching.
- Partner with product, design, QA, data, and platform teams to translate learning goals into polished mobile features.
- Promote engineering best practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, observability, release management, and secure development.
- Evaluate tradeoffs, identify technical risks, and guide pragmatic decisions that balance speed, quality, and long-term scalability.
- Contribute hands-on to critical features, architecture improvements, debugging, and production support.
- Collaborate effectively across distributed teams and communicate technical plans, progress, and outcomes to stakeholders.
What You Bring:
- Passion for using technology to improve educational outcomes.
- 8+ years of software development experience, including significant hands-on experience building production mobile applications.
- Proven technical leadership experience, including leading complex mobile initiatives and mentoring engineers in a collaborative, agile environment.
- Deep mobile engineering expertise, including native iOS and/or Android development, Swift, Kotlin, mobile architecture patterns, performance tuning, and app store release practices.
- Experience building scalable, product-focused tools, platforms, or applications used by meaningful customer audiences.
- Comfort working with APIs, backend services, authentication, analytics, experimentation, and cloud connected mobile systems.
- Experience operating in a SOX- and/or SOC 2-compliant environment, or a strong understanding of secure, compliant engineering practices.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with experience working across functions and distributed teams. Commitment to innovation, quality, accessibility, and user-centered development.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
- Experience in EdTech or with systems that support digital learning.
- Experience with AI-enabled learning experiences, personalization, or automation in software development workflows.
- Familiarity with cross-platform frameworks, shared mobile libraries, or mobile design systems.
- Experience improving mobile CI/CD pipelines, test automation, crash monitoring, or release health metrics.

The pay range for this position is between $124,300 - $185,000 annually. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
