Description

The Weed Foreperson oversees, coordinates, and trains the seasonal weed crew engaged in the control of noxious weeds by applying herbicides according to specifications along county roads, and county parks; responsible for the development and implementation of educational programs; performs other related duties as required.

  • Reviews schedules to ascertain service delivery, machinery needs, and work force requirements, includes scheduling work for crews according to weather conditions, availability of equipment, and seasonal limitations; 
  • Ensures the safe and effective use of equipment, adherence to safety and environmental regulations, and the efficient management of daily operations;
  • Spray weeds along county roads, county parks, county properties and complete spray contracts from BLM, MDT, FWP, Bureau of Reclamation, the City of Billings, and Billings City Parks;
  • During the fall and winter months, buckthorn, Russian Olive, and saltcedar removal will be performed on county parks and county properties;
  • Suggests formula and procedure changes and orders corrective work to improve quality of service and ensure contract compliance;
  • Prepares reports of weed infestations as identified through inspections.
Education/Experience/Training:
  • Associate degree in environmental science, Ecology, Botany, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, or a related field; and 
  • One (1) years’ experience in vegetation control, weed identification, and training; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training totaling three (3) years.
 Required:
  • Must pass a criminal and driving background check and meet any County-specific employment eligibility standards.
Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Montana;
  • Montana Government Applicator License through the Department of Agriculture, or the ability to obtain license within the six (6) month probationary period.
