POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Development is a frontline fundraiser and team leader responsible for growing individual and corporate giving, leading annual giving and donor-engagement strategies, and achieving the revenue and relationship-building goals of BGCC’s fundraising events. The Director manages qualified donor and corporate prospect portfolios, builds sustainable fundraising pipelines, supervises assigned Development staff, and uses data to improve fundraising performance. Working in close partnership with the Vice President of Development & Marketing, CEO, and board members, the Director aligns donor interests with BGCC’s mission and organizational priorities. The Director models and fosters behavior consistent with BGCC’s core values, vision, and mission.
The expected starting compensation for this role is $90,000-$105,000 annually. This is a FLSA salaried, exempt position.
KEY ROLES (ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES)
Individual & Annual Giving
• In partnership with the Vice President of Development & Marketing, develop and manage strategies to grow individual giving, including annual giving, donor acquisition, retention, upgrade, and portfolio development.
• Manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects with capacity to give $500 or more; qualify prospects and develop individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
• Personally solicit gifts in the $500–$1,000 range and identify prospects with the capacity and interest to be cultivated for major gifts by the Vice President of Development & Marketing.
• Personally cultivate and solicit annual gifts generally ranging from $500 to $10,000, while identifying and preparing qualified prospects for major-gift solicitation in partnership with the Vice President of Development & Marketing and CEO.
• Partner with the Vice President and board members, as appropriate, to align donor interests with organizational priorities and develop cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
• Develop and execute annual giving campaigns, appeals, and targeted solicitations designed to acquire, retain, and upgrade individual donors.
• Develop, implement, and oversee a Giving Society program designed to increase donor retention, engagement, recognition, and annual giving.
• Build and manage an annual calendar of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship touchpoints, including donor meetings, events, direct mail, digital campaigns, and targeted appeals.
• Partner with the Development & Marketing team to produce donor communications, campaign materials, and other resources that support individual giving and donor engagement.
• Ensure timely, accurate, and meaningful donor acknowledgment, recognition, and communication regarding the impact of contributions.
• Maintain accurate and timely records of donor interactions, moves management, solicitations, and stewardship activities in BGCC’s donor management system.
• Monitor individual giving performance against established goals, including revenue, donor retention, donor acquisition, upgrades, portfolio activity, and Giving Society participation; analyze results and adjust strategies as needed.
Special Events
• Lead the strategy, planning, execution, and evaluation of BGCC’s fundraising events, with responsibility for achieving established revenue, engagement, sponsorship, donor-acquisition and relationship-building goals.
• Plan and execute the Blue Door Bash, BGCC’s signature fundraising event, including revenue strategy, sponsorship, ticket and table sales, auction and other fundraising activities, volunteer engagement, event logistics, and post-event evaluation.
• Lead the planning and execution of additional fundraising and donor-cultivation events as assigned.
• Develop and manage event revenue pipelines, including corporate sponsors, individual prospects, table hosts, ticket buyers, auction donors, and other fundraising opportunities.
• Recruit, engage, and develop event volunteer committees.
• Cultivate and mobilize individual and corporate relationships in support of event and broader organizational goals.
• Partner with the Vice President, CEO, board members, and other staff to engage high-value prospects and corporate partners in event-related fundraising opportunities.
• Develop and manage event budgets; monitor revenue and expenses against established goals and implement corrective strategies as needed.
• Evaluate event performance, including gross and net revenue, expenses, return on investment, participation, donor acquisition, and relationship development, and recommend improvements for future events.
Corporate Giving & Sponsorship
• Develop and manage a corporate fundraising strategy to grow sponsorships, contributions, and long-term corporate partnerships.
• Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate prospects and partners.
• Build and manage a pipeline of corporate prospects, including small businesses, mid-sized companies, and larger corporate partners.
• Develop customized strategies and proposals that align corporate interests with BGCC’s mission, organizational priorities, programs, events, and other fundraising opportunities.
• Engage the Vice President, CEO, and board members in senior-level cultivation and solicitation of high-value corporate prospects and partners.
• Develop and manage corporate sponsorship packages and partnership opportunities, including event sponsorships.
• Maintain accurate prospect, solicitation, and stewardship records in the donor management system.
• Monitor corporate revenue, pipeline activity, renewals, and new-partner acquisition against goals and adjust strategies to maximize results.
Development Team Leadership
• Supervise and develop the Development Manager and Development Coordinator, establishing clear goals, priorities, responsibilities, and performance expectations.
• Ensure effective coordination of individual giving, corporate giving, events, donor relations, and fundraising communications.
• Establish workflows and systems that coordinate fundraising activities, ensure deadlines are met, and support consistent donor and prospect follow-up.
• Use fundraising data and performance metrics to guide team priorities, evaluate progress, and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Foster a collaborative, accountable, inclusive, and donor-centered culture across the Development team.
Organizational & Campaign Support
• Support major-gift, planned-giving, and capital-campaign activity led by the Vice President of Development & Marketing, CEO, and campaign leadership, including prospect research, cultivation planning, donor engagement, proposal development, and stewardship, as assigned.
• Collaborate across departments to gather program information, outcomes, stories, and financial information needed for compelling donor communications and proposals.
• Represent BGCC professionally at community, donor, corporate, and partner meetings and events.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• At least five years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, including demonstrated success in two or more of the following areas: individual giving, corporate giving and sponsorships, donor portfolio management, annual campaigns, and fundraising events.
• Demonstrated experience supervising staff, leading teams, or managing complex cross-functional projects.
• Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships, solicit charitable contributions, meet revenue goals, and manage multiple fundraising pipelines.
• Experience using a donor database or fundraising CRM to document moves management, analyze performance, and support timely follow-up.
• Strong donor-centered judgment, strategic thinking, initiative, interpersonal skills, resilience, accountability, and ability to build productive networks.
• Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and relationship-management skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and comparable collaboration and productivity tools.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment while contributing as a collaborative team member.
• Ability to travel locally and attend evening and weekend meetings and events as required. Reliable transportation is required for work-related travel.
ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Tasks are regularly performed in an office, Club, community, and special event environment with moderate exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, and temperature and noise extremes.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires regular computer and telephone use, local travel, and occasional evening and weekend work. The employee may occasionally move event materials weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
