Description

Under the direction of the Parks Maintenance Leadman, the General Laborer performs a broad range of duties in grounds keeping, landscaping, and maintenance in parks and recreation facilities.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Maintains turf areas: mows, aerates, fertilizes, seeds, removes weeds, re-sods and edges turf areas using equipment and tools such as mowers, blowers, medium to heavy trucks, rototillers, shovels, picks, hoes, rakes, and edgers
- Plants and prunes trees, shrubs, groundcover, and flowers using equipment and tools such as chain saws, loppers and shears
- Prepares and applies pesticides and fertilizers
- Inspects parks, playgrounds, and recreation areas for hazards and unsafe conditions and makes necessary repairs or modifications
- Maintains non-turf areas: lays out field lines, levels dirt and waters multipurpose fields
- Maintains and repairs picnic tables, fences, benches, walkways, and playground equipment using tools such as saws, drills, wrenches, screwdrivers and hammers
- May perform minor cement work
- Repairs and adjust automatic and manual irrigations systems in park facilities.
- Responds to questions from the public
- Maintains simple records of activities
- General assistance to special events or activities
- Ensures use of safe and efficient on-site practices and procedures

- Knowledge of use of the vehicles, equipment, material, power and hand tools
- Knowledge of common safety practices and procedures
- Knowledge of common safety hazards to be identified
- Knowledge of standard building and grounds maintenance techniques
- Knowledge of basic installation and repair of manual and automatic irrigation systems
- Ability perform routine tasks associated with maintenance of grounds and facilities
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions
- Ability to drive vehicles and equipment in the parks on the street
- Ability to perform rough carpentry work in repairing park items
- Ability to work odd and irregular hours including weekends and holidays
- Ability operate minor tools and equipment
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Valid California driver license
