Male Correctional Officer ON-CALL

Under the direct supervision of the Jail Administrator, the Correctional Officer supports the Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office by providing quality services that promote and protect the safety, security, and well-being of all the people in the community. The Correctional Officer is responsible for the professional administration and enforcement of all federal, state, and local laws as well as the provision of other law enforcement services to the public. This position works in a 24/7 linear supervision facility and maintains a secure jail facility, ensures the safety and welfare of the inmates, performs jail bookings and releases, and organizes and supervises inmate activity. This position also assures preparation and service of medications and meals, collects financial transactions, and maintains administration and facility records.

• Assess arrestees’ physical and mental appropriateness for jail confinement and determines housing classification and assignments. Assists in the medical care of inmates to include response to medical emergencies, medication verifications and medication distribution
• Assures preparation and service of inmate meals. Documents and notifies appropriate personnel of any tray refusals, hunger strikes, and special diets identified at booking
• Books and releases inmates by performing booking functions of new inmates to include photographing, fingerprinting, and searches. Interprets Court Orders and performs release functions in accordance with lawful orders and policy, to include: victim notifications, outstanding warrant checks, property return, and completion of all release documents, medication release, and compliance with release orders, UA’s, etc
• Collects, verifies, and records financial transactions. Maintains and records all deposits and withdrawals from inmate accounts. Collects, verifies and records bail money as ordered by the Courts
• Conducts fingerprints of the public, including the collection of fees. Provides public with assistance and inmate information. Collect after-hours civil process and gun permits
• Conducts tours of the facility as directed  
• Maintains a secure jail facility. Performs various inspections to identify any safety or mechanical issues within the jail. Conduct searches on inmates, living areas, cells and visitors to detect contraband in accordance with jail policy and procedures. Monitors audio and video systems to ensure secure inmate movement and proper identification and clearance of persons requesting entry into the facility
• Maintains inmate records by entering inmate data into computer files and submits to proper agencies, maintains detailed record of all inmate activity, medical needs (including prescriptions), reports, and other documents to ensure that the inmate files are accurate
• Processes Predatory Offender Registration-Incarceration Reports, and Change of Information
• Provides as-needed security for off-campus community events, and to Court by acting as Bailiff
• Responds to emergency situations utilizing necessary emergency equipment to ensure the safety of inmates and staff. Acts in the event of emergencies by responding appropriately or as directed. Subdues inmates during altercations or escapes, and defends self and others.  Acts swiftly to minimize damage to property, equipment or the facility. Intervenes safely to prevent or stop inmate self-harm or suicidal behavior
• Supervises inmates by enforcing the jail rules and carries out procedures as defined by state and Sheriff’s Office policies which may include, but is not limited to: interacting with and supervising inmates in their daily activities, maintaining order, monitoring behavior, responding to and attempting to resolve inmate concerns/conflicts, responding to emergencies, monitoring inmates’ communications (such as mail and phone calls), maintaining necessary logs and reports, and performing housekeeping and sanitation practices as necessary to ensure a safe facility
• Transports inmates; picks up inmates from other agencies, hospitals, detox facilities, and treatment facilities; drops off inmates at other agencies, hospitals, and detox facilities
• Supervises inmates at appointments, Emergency Room, hospital visits, etc

• Valid MN Driver’s License, and
• High School Diploma or GED

• Ability to complete Taser, Use of Force, Tactics training
• Ability to complete Medication Administration training
• Ability to complete DOC required training
• Ability to complete CPR/First Aid training
• Ability complete Field Training Officer Manual
• Ability to complete all in-house training

• Ability to listen, comprehend, and effectively communicate information both written and orally to all individuals
• Ability to use a computer and related software applications
• Ability to write, prepare, and complete thoroughly accurate detailed reports
• Ability to monitor and maintain inmate order
• Ability to respond quickly, calmly, and appropriately to crisis and emergency situations
• Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain confidentiality of data and information obtained from work-related resources
• Knowledge of the proper use of medical equipment and distribution of prescription medications
• Sufficient knowledge of jail policies and procedures
• Knowledge and ability to operate video and audio equipment
• Knowledge of methods and practices of jail housekeeping
• Knowledge of and ability to administer first aid and CPR techniques
• Knowledge of Minnesota Statutes relating to the care and commitment of inmates
• Knowledge of the safety requirements and expectations applicable to the worksite
• Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations
• Knowledge of record retention schedule principles
