Position Summary:
Your Impact (Essential Duties)
Serve as the firm's technical leader for State & Local Tax (SALT) matters, advising clients on multistate tax planning, compliance, and controversy issues.
Provide strategic consulting related to income and franchise tax, sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, property tax, credits and incentives, and nexus determinations.
Lead complex SALT engagements including nexus studies, voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), taxability analyses, state tax audits, refund opportunities, and multistate planning projects.
Advise clients on the state and local tax implications of mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and business expansions.
Monitor legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments across state and local jurisdictions and communicate impacts to clients and internal teams.
Collaborate with federal tax, international tax, transaction advisory, advisory, and assurance professionals to deliver integrated tax solutions.
Build trusted advisor relationships with CFOs, controllers, tax directors, and business owners.
Review technical research, client deliverables, and complex SALT memoranda for quality and accuracy.
Mentor, develop, and coach managers, senior associates, and associates.
Support business development through networking, proposals, client expansion, and thought leadership.
Drive practice development initiatives, internal training, and process improvements.
Manage engagement budgets, staffing, timelines, profitability, and client satisfaction.
Meet annual billable hour and business development expectations.
Your Background
10+ years of experience in tax preparation, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity and significant specialization in State & Local Tax.
CPA license (An exception to the CPA designation will be considered if they practice in a recognized specialty area and hold an equivalent or applicable professional designation that demonstrates expertise relevant to the firm’s services and strategic goals)
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field
Deep expertise in multistate income/franchise tax, sales and use tax, nexus, apportionment, tax controversy, and state tax planning.
Experience advising middle-market and closely held businesses across multiple industries.
Strong knowledge of state tax laws, regulations, and legislative developments.
Experience managing complex client engagements from planning through implementation.
Ability to identify tax savings opportunities and deliver strategic consulting beyond compliance.
Excellent research, analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
Proven leadership in managing and scaling teams, including mentoring senior managers and future leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, growth, and technical excellence
Business development acumen, with experience in expanding existing relationships, winning new engagements, and participating in pricing and proposal strategies aligned with firm goals
Forward-thinking and innovative, consistently contributing to internal knowledge leadership, policy development, and process improvements across the tax function
Respected internal advisor, often consulted by peers and firm leadership on regulatory shifts, high-impact tax risks, and opportunities for service expansion
