Job Description:

The Research Facilities Specialist provides technical and operational support for the maintenance and upkeep of the Louisiana Light Source (LLS), formerly the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), at LSU. Reporting to and working under the overall direction of the Facility Manager, the position performs routine facility and equipment maintenance, assists with the installation of scientific equipment, and supports cryogenic and other specialized facility operations. The position helps ensure that LLS facilities, equipment, and building systems are maintained safely and effectively in support of the facility's research activities.

Job Responsibilities:

Facility Maintenance and Support - Performs routine maintenance and technical support for LLS facilities under the overall direction of the Facility Manager, including work involving building air and gas systems, control systems, and general building systems. Assists the Facility Manager in coordinating work with LSU Facility Services involving larger building systems, including HVAC systems, electrical feeders, and building code-related issues. Assists with the annual equipment inventory. (40%)

Scientific Equipment Installation and Cryogenic Support - Assists with the installation of beamlines, hutches, shield walls, and associated scientific equipment. Supports cryogenic operations by handling liquid helium and nitrogen, operating and maintaining cryogenic equipment, and assisting with liquefaction processes in accordance with established procedures and training. Performs these activities under the overall direction of the Facility Manager. (20%)

Vacuum Pump and Water Chiller Maintenance - Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vacuum pumps and water chillers. Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment issues and performs component replacement and other routine repairs within the scope of the position. Communicates identified issues and repair needs to the Facility Manager and coordinates more extensive repairs as directed. (15%)

Grounds and Exterior Facility Maintenance - Performs routine grounds and exterior facility maintenance, including mowing, weed control, painting, pressure washing, and related upkeep necessary to maintain LLS buildings and grounds. (15%)

Other duties as assigned. (10%)

This position serves as backup for the Facility Manager's 24/7 on-call coverage when the Facility Manager is unavailable and may be required to respond to after-hours facility issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and 1 year of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum qualifications stated above: Experience with mechanical systems, equipment maintenance and repair, vacuum systems, water chillers, electrical or control systems, or other related technical equipment. Experience working in a research, laboratory, industrial, or technical facility environment.

This position requires a valid driver's license, will require an MVR. This position is classified as a safety and security-sensitive position. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67. This position will require a physical examination based on the physical demands required.
