Job Summary
The Webcam / Sensor Hardware Engineer is responsible for defining, developing, and qualifying camera and sensing technologies for HP commercial displays and conferencing solutions. The engineer will drive architecture decisions for RGB cameras, IR sensors, Windows Hello, Human Presence Detection (HPD), ToF sensing, image processing, privacy/security features, and AI-enabled conferencing experiences.
The role works across system engineering, suppliers, ODM partners, firmware, software, quality, and product management to deliver industry-leading collaboration experiences while achieving cost, quality, reliability, and schedule goals.
Responsibilities
Product Architecture
- Define webcam and sensor architecture roadmaps for commercial display products.
- Evaluate RGB, IR, ToF, ALS, and emerging sensor technologies.
- Drive design decisions for image quality, low-light performance, privacy, security, and AI capabilities.
- Develop requirements for conferencing monitors, premium monitors, and future AI-enhanced products.
Hardware Development
- Lead camera module selection and qualification.
- Define image sensor, lens, ISP, microphone, and controller requirements.
- Work with ODMs and suppliers on schematic review, layout, integration, and bring-up.
- Support development of Windows Hello, HPD, auto-framing, background blur, and presence-detection solutions.
Supplier Management
- Develop technical RFQ requirements and supplier scorecards.
- Engage with webcam, sensor, ISP, and semiconductor suppliers.
- Drive supplier technology roadmaps and cost optimization initiatives.
- Resolve technical issues through root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Validation and Certification
- Develop validation plans for camera and sensing solutions.
- Support Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Windows Hello, and other certification programs.
- Drive image quality tuning and optimization.
- Ensure compliance with privacy and security requirements.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with electrical, firmware, software, audio, mechanical, and quality teams.
- Present technical recommendations to engineering and management leadership.
- Support roadmap planning and phase-exit reviews.
- Drive resolution of technical risks and escalations.
Education & Experience Recommended
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in camera, image sensor, optical, ISP, or sensing technologies.
- Knowledge of:
- CMOS image sensors
- RGB and IR camera systems
- Image Signal Processors (ISP)
- USB video devices
- Windows camera architecture
- Human Presence Detection technologies
- Experience with hardware development and ODM engagement.
- Strong problem-solving and debug skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Windows Hello or biometric authentication systems.
- Experience with ToF sensors and depth-sensing technologies.
- Familiarity with Teams and Zoom certification requirements.
- Experience with camera image-quality tuning and calibration.
