Overview

Electric Boat is seeking a manufacturing process and automation programmer to support the growth of the Columbia and Virginia Class programs. The Groton, CT Machine Shop is the premier manufacturer of high-profile, intricate submarine components produced from advanced materials including Inconel, Monel, Titanium, Stainless Steels, Bronze, and others.

 

The selected individual will be extensively trained on the systems and be a major contributor to the health of robotic manufacturing in the Groton shipyard. This individual could also be flexed to assist with all other equipment that requires programming. The work accomplished by Electric Boat in the area of robotics is high-mix, low-volume job shop environment and the candidate needs to be able to independently program the optimal sequence to ensure completion of the job. This will begin with ensuring current equipment is running as intended and preprogrammed and will evolve into adding additional programs to the equipment as Electric Boat continues to scale this technology and expand the use cases.

 

Responsibilities:

• Develop, validate, and optimize programs for robotic or CNC-based automated equipment, including path planning, sequence design, and process interrupts.
• Analyze engineering drawings, 3D models, sketches, and design data to determine manufacturing requirements.
• Support development of manufacturing documentation including setup instructions, tooling specifications, and work instructions.
• Troubleshoot machining, tooling, programming, and inspection issues to ensure stable and repeatable processes.
• Assist with program verification, first-run prove-outs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support custom tooling and fixture design for safe, efficient, and repeatable operations.
• Suggest traveler/router updates that support improved or revised manufacturing processes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED
• 5+ years of experience in programming, setup, and/or operation of CNC or robotic manufacturing equipment
• Experience interpreting mechanical blueprints and GD&T
• Experience with manufacturing processes involving advanced metals (Inconel, Monel, stainless steels, etc.)
• Must be able to work on any shift, including swing shift

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with FANUC controls, OSP controls, G-code programming, or robotic programming environments
• CAD/CAM experience (Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Mastercam, AutoCAD)
• Experience with process development, first-article validation, or NPI transition activities
• Familiarity with offline programming or simulation software
• Background in fixture/tooling design.
• College degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or related technical field

Skills

• Strong blueprint and GD&T (ASME Y14.5) interpretation
• Ability to compute machining or robotic path parameters (angles, distances, offsets, etc.)
• Hands-on capability with machining, probing functions, inspection (including CMM), or welding-adjacent fabrication processes
• Knowledge of materials and manufacture of components utilizing said materials. (Steels, Stainless Steels, Monel, K-Monel, Inconel, Bronze, Titanium, etc.)
  • Determine the optimal sequence of operations with correct tooling, and parameter sets to weld various materials, processes, and positions
• Prove out and Support: Lead “first-article” runs on the shop floor, troubleshooting programs in real-time and adjusting machine offsets to hit target tolerances
• Ability to troubleshoot and improve manufacturing processes in real time
