$29,458.00 - $55,943.42

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

Employees in this classification perform a wide variety of manual labor, as assigned by a supervisor. Work may consist of more than one specific routine task, as delineated in the Essential Examples of Duties.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Service Worker. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor in the Construction and Maintenance Division.

 • Assists in the construction, maintenance, cleaning, repairs, and, installations in the various City facilities.

• Forms and pours new sidewalks and concrete.

• Breaks and replaces asphalt and concrete pavement.

• Digs and refills ditches.

• Digs, levels and spreads fill, rock, sand, gravel and soil.

• Breaks concrete with air hammer and mixes mortar.

• Maintains sports facilities, as assigned.

• Paints City facilities (interior and exterior).

• Cleans, maintains and performs minor repairs to City facilities.

• Sweeps gutters and alleys, and loads collected waste into trucks; cleans and maintains the roof of buildings.

• Collects debris and loads collected waste into trucks, as needed.

• Loads and unloads trucks.

• Operate hand tools like saw, drills, jack hammers.

• Rakes grass and trash; and cuts down and removes trees.

• Can assist plumbers, carpenters, and skilled craftsman with their tasks, as directed.

• Transports materials, supplies and equipment used by crews.

• Moves and carries heavy material such as pipe, lumber, gravel, sand and furniture.

• Washes and cleans vehicles.

• Smooth or sand surfaces.

• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Ability to perform light and heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.

• Ability to understand and follow specific oral or written instructions.

• Ability to drive a truck, if required.

• Ability to acquire knowledge and proficiency in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.

• Significant walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, sitting, standing, pushing and pulling.

• Ability to lift heavy objects.

               

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Work involves frequent walking, bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from an accredited high school/institution or possession of a state high school equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Minimum of six months of experience in performing unskilled, light, or heavy manual labor.
  • Have a current valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
