Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.

Job Summary:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the News & Entertainment Engineering team, you will architect, build, and maintain backend services that power user entitlements, purchases, and metering across Disney’s portfolio of brands — including Marvel, ABC News, and National Geographic. This role is intended for an experienced engineer who takes accountability for system health, makes sound technical decisions, and delivers reliable, scalable solutions for mission-critical, high-traffic services. You will be 100% hands-on with development, delivering quickly and iteratively in an agile environment.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

• Participate in the design and implementation of multi-layered systems delivering high throughput consumer facing experiences
• Collaborate & troubleshoot with the rest of the team in the analysis and resolution of hard engineering problems involving high trafficked web application services and APIs. Oversee service performance, scalability, and event planning requirements
• Contribute to and lead cross-team architecture discussions. Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, enforce development best practices, and review code to ensure product and design specifications are met
• Research, learn, and evangelize widespread adoption of new technologies and architecture patterns. Influence and contribute to department technical strategy and planning.

 

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant industry experience as a software engineer
• Excellent programming skills and strong knowledge of the Java platform and Java web applications and frameworks (Spring/Tomcat/etc)
• Deep understanding of web architecture including HTTP, caching, and API delivery paradigms (REST, GraphQL)
• Strong understanding of both relational and NoSQL persistence stores and the ability to determine which is the right tool for the job
• Hands-on experience developing cloud-based services on Amazon Web Services
• Experience with the full software development lifecycle and common best practices like unit testing, collaborative version control flows, and continuous integration
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to resolve a wide range of issues in innovative ways

Preferred Qualifications

• A grounding in identity and user access management concepts and experience integrating with third-party payment processors such as Apple App Store/Google Play Store
• Proven experience developing, monitoring, and maintaining high-volume and highly-available distributed systems
• Experience with real-time messaging frameworks such as Kafka or AWS messaging services
• Hands-on experience performing DevOps duties and developing infrastructure as code (Jenkins, TeamCity, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Kubernetes)
• Effective use of AI‑assisted developer tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) to improve code quality, development velocity, and maintainability

• Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively, both in writing and orally

Required Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
