Job Title:                                           Diagnostic Imaging Assistant/ Health Care Assistant         

Contract Type:                                Part time Permanent Contract

Reports to:                                       Radiology Services Managers     

Main Duties: (Responsibilities are not listed in order of priority)

  • To participate in all non-medical duties associated with scans within the Diagnostic Imaging Department:
    • preparation of room and equipment needed for scans/procedures
    • switching on/off equipment
    • escorting and care of patient
    • prioritising and organising RIS worklist in conjunction with other appropriate personnel
    • assisting Radiologists/ Radiographers/ Sonographers/ Nurses during all Diagnostic Imaging examinations
    • delivery of specimens and tests to laboratory
    • cleaning of room, equipment, patient areas and any other areas as needed
    • following specific duties assigned to various modalities; CT, MRI, US and General Area
  • To make ready the various Diagnostic Imaging rooms and help and maintain readiness throughout the day, ensuring the room is ready for use.
  • To transport patients to and from Diagnostic Imaging and other hospital locations, and within the Diagnostic Imaging Department. This includes trolley transport in conjunction with one other member of staff.
  • To manage the orders for the Departments’ Stocks & Supplies and distribute/store orders once delivered.
  • To undertake the Department environmental audit and mange recommendations/ improvements from such audits.
  • To transport patient documentation i.e. reports/ charts/ films, instructions and scan preparation to and from the appropriate wards/ departments/ patients.
  • To transport contrast media and communicate instructions/prep to patients for Diagnostic Imaging examinations.
  • To stay with very sick/ distressed patients while the Radiologists/ Radiographers/ Sonographers/ Nurses are otherwise engaged. To offer reassurance and understanding to patients.
  • Take responsibility for the general cleanliness, tidiness and safety of the Department, with specific responsibility for their own work area by complying with the local guidelines for Infection Control and Health and Safety.
  • To help the PACS/RIS Team with any PACS/RIS Duties if and when required.
  • To contribute to unexpected workload – that may be required for both the Radiology and secretarial staff e.g. filing, escorting patients to cubicles to change and helping patients change when elderly or infirm.
  • To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested by the Radiology Services Managers.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a professional and caring relationship with patients that will ensure our patients are at ease with the prospect of procedures/scans being carried out.
  • To maintain a professional and caring approach in all interactions, and ensure all interactions reflect the Dignity and Respect at Work policy in the Hospital.
  • To co-operate with all quality initiatives within the Department thus ensuring that an effective and efficient high quality Diagnostic Imaging service is provided at all times.
  • To comply with Health & Safety Regulations, ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment.
  • Comply with Local and National Radiation Protection Rules, Regulations & Guidelines at all times.
  • Familiarise themselves in the operation and use of new pieces of imaging equipment and provide guidance to staff in correct use of same.
  • Participate in orientation programmes and tutoring of new staff.
  • Complete in-house mandatory training.
  • Maintain all documentation in accordance with hospital policy including data protection and confidentiality e.g. patient information, log books, quality assurance records.
  • Maintain clear and receptive lines of communication, between clinical and non clinical colleagues to ensure a professional and high quality imaging service.
  • Liaise with other departments, GPs, Consultants, Secretaries and colleagues to ensure effective patient management.
  • To understand and adhere to the Hospital/Department Policies, Procedures & Guidelines.
  • Be familiar with Hospital Standards and ensure that these standards are adhered to.
  • Implement and maintain Hospital JCI Accreditation Standards including departmental compliance with International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG’s).
  • Implement and maintain JCI AOP Radiology Standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects, to resolve patient focused problems, to ensure the delivery of a quality service to the patients.
  • Participate in Departmental Quality Improvement Initiatives.
  • Maintain Departmental KPI’s.
  • Help implement and maintain relevant HIQA and EPA guidelines.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in accordance with the various shift patterns and the service needs of the Department.
  • Follow correct clinical dress code.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good standard of Education (Leaving Certificate or equivalent)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Achieved QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support qualification or equivalent

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

  • Previous Experience in a similar role in a Healthcare Setting

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully and sensitively with patients, public, staff and management including the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner

  • Strong team work skills including the ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Can demonstrate versatility and capability of coping with change
  • Exceptional level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience working in a fast paced rapidly changing environment
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Exceptional keyboard/IT skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Competent in the use of Hospital IT Systems and Department processes to ensure work is completed to a high standard
