PART-TIME MAINTENANCE WORKER
DEPARTMENT: Public Services
DIVISION: Refuse
RATE OF PAY: $20.00/hour.
WORK HOURS: Part-time employment, up to 29 hours per week; Saturdays required.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position performs work involving manual labor and physically demanding unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks. Works as a part-time employee within the Refuse Division supporting the safe and efficient daily operation of the Green Waste Facility. Duties include but are not limited to assisting with the Green Waste Facility and Refuse Division duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operating Log splitters, woodchippers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, pressure washers, air compressors, cart washers, wash bay equipment, and other equipment used by the Refuse Division; performing daily equipment inspections and routine preventive maintenance; reporting equipment deficiencies and repair needs; safely loading, unloading, processing, moving, and stocking green waste products; maintaining facility grounds, work areas, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and organized condition;
- Provides courteous and professional customer service to residents and visitors.
- Assists all customers with Green Waste Facility services and products.
- Operates the computerized point-of-sale system and cash register; accurately receives and processes cash and credit card transactions; balances and reconciles the daily cash drawer; and maintains accurate sales and inventory.
- Follows OSHA requirements and all City and departmental safety policies and procedures, uses required personal protective equipment, and works safely around customers, vehicles, moving equipment, and powered machinery such as Log splitter, woodchipper, chainsaws, weed trimmers, pressure washers, air compressors, cart washers, wash bay equipment, and other equipment used by the Refuse Division.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must Possess a valid Utah Driver's License
- Some knowledge of tools used in maintenance and solid waste operations and of precautions necessary to work safely around mechanized equipment
- Ability to safely operate, or learn to operate, equipment and powered tools.
- Learn computerized point-of-sale and record-keeping systems; accurately handle and account for money; and carry out written and verbal instructions.
- Must provide strong customer service, communicate effectively, work independently and as part of a team, and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Completion of twelfth grade is preferred.
- Experience operating Log splitters, woodchippers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, pressure washers, air compressors, cart washers, wash bay equipment used by the Refuse Division, or similar equipment and experience in cash handling and customer service are preferred.
POSITION SCHEDULE
- This position has a maximum of 29 hours per week.
- Dependable attendance is required to maintain safe operations and provide consistent customer service.
- Saturday attendance is an essential function of the position
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work environment is primarily outdoors, which may expose the employee to moderate to very loud noises, wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibrations.
- Travel among worksites is required, which exposes the worker to the hazard's incident to travel by vehicle.
- The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances, identify and distinguish colors, observe an area that can be seen up and down or the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
- Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, and smelling.

DRIVER LICENSE REPORT (MVR)
Driver license report (MVR) will be obtained by the Human Resources division if applicable.
