Xavier University, a Jesuit Catholic university in Cincinnati, Ohio, seeks an innovative, collaborative, and visionary individual committed to promoting and fostering excellence in teaching, research, professional practice, and service as the next Dean of the College of Nursing. The college is among the nation's leaders in holistic nursing and proud to be among the select nursing schools to receive the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation’s (AHNCC) endorsement.

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean will bring the leadership and management qualities to build on the college's strengths and take it to even higher levels of academic excellence and student success. The Dean will collaborate with the faculty and staff to promote the college’s mission, advance strategic priorities, and create an environment that encourages growth and innovation. The Dean will foster scholarship and research along with partnerships with community partners. As a member of the Provost Area Leadership Team, the Dean will be expected to work collaboratively with the Deans across the University to ensure excellent programs that serve students, promote Xavier’s Jesuit Catholic values, and serve the community in Cincinnati and across the United States.

The College of Nursing is an integral part of Xavier Health, Xavier’s flourishing ecosystem of health programs. As a leader within Xavier Health, the next Dean of Nursing will promote the breadth and distinctive strengths of Xavier’s health programs, build strong relationships across the institution-wide health portfolio, and foster interdisciplinary and interprofessional education, practice, research, and service.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate an appreciation of and commitment to Xavier’s Jesuit Catholic mission with an ability to embed this mission into the life and priorities of the college. In addition, the next Dean will be student-focused; possess excellent interpersonal, communication, administrative, and organizational skills; and demonstrate the ability to articulate a vision that encourages and inspires quality program growth.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership

• In consultation with faculty, creates an environment and implements strategies to encourage exemplary teaching, scholarship, and service, integrating the Jesuit Catholic tradition.

• Inspires confidence, motivates others for engagement and innovation and addresses conflict constructively and fairly.

• Provides leadership and support for approximately 25 full-time faculty, 150 adjunct clinical faculty, and 11 staff members within the College of Nursing.

• Engages in strategic planning.

• Establishes an environment that values collaboration and inclusiveness.

• Promotes and facilitates the development of innovative and sustainable academic programs that respond to student, workforce, community, and healthcare needs while maintaining academic quality and appropriate faculty and clinical resources.

 

Financial Management

• In collaboration with the Vice Presidents, Deans, and XU Council, plans and evaluates the College’s budget and related activities to ensure alignment with the mission, strategic priorities, and policies of the University.

• Develops, administers, and monitors the College’s budget; advocates for adequate resources to support academic programs, faculty, staff, and student success; and maintains ultimate responsibility for the College’s fiscal management.

Relationship Building

• Represents the college and the university at the city, state, and national levels.

• Partners with University Advancement to cultivate relationships with alumni, donors, foundations, healthcare organizations, and other external partners to advance philanthropic support for the college.

• Represents the college at the Provost Area Leadership Team and President’s Cabinet meetings.

• Seeks opportunities to collaborate with other Deans and stakeholders across the University.

• Seeks opportunities to establish collaborative relationships with the community.

• Builds strong relationships with faculty and staff and fosters a culture of collaboration, shared governance, professional development, and mutual respect.   

Management

• Serves as an advocate for faculty and staff.

• Oversees the hiring process and evaluation of faculty and staff.

• Makes recommendations regarding reappointments, promotion, tenure, and sabbaticals.

• Monitors the implementation of the Strategic Plan and Systematic Evaluation Plan.

• Evaluates administrators and staff.

• Develops and upholds policies and procedures consistent with the student and faculty handbooks, College bylaws, and University policies

Accreditation

• Submits pertinent accreditation and regulatory documents and reports to the Ohio Board of Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

• Serves as the Ohio Board of Nursing Program Administrator for all pre-licensure programs.

• Oversees assessment and reporting activities to maintain specialized and institutional accreditation for the college's educational programs.

Required Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate from an accredited institution with at least one graduate degree in nursing.

• Minimum of five years of experience in academic nursing, including demonstrated higher education administrative and leadership experience.

• Eligible for licensure as a registered professional nurse in Ohio.

• Record of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service, that merits appointment as a tenured associate or full professor within the college.

• Demonstrated experience in academic administration, faculty leadership, program development, strategic planning, and/or organizational management.
• Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, student success, collaboration, inclusion and innovation.
• Experience with accreditation, assessment, and regulatory requirements within nursing or higher education.
