Description

The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is looking for highly motivated individual to join our team as a Paralegal I. The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of support tasks that require the exercise of initiative and independent judgment along with the ability to anticipate needs and appropriately respond. Candidates must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently; strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims, and other agencies; analytical and critical thinking skills to make decisions and initiate action; time management skills to effectively and accurately handle multiple tasks within often short deadlines; and the ability to handle emergency situations and work under pressure.

Work Schedule: This position works a 40-hour work week schedule, normally Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is eligible for King County’s generous benefits package.
Employees assigned to this position enjoy a hybrid work schedule that allows telecommuting with a minimum of 2-days in office per week, subject to business needs and a telecommuting agreement. If a successful candidate is new to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, they will be required to work in office four days a week for the first six months of employment.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Union Membership: Positions in this classification are represented by Teamsters Local No. 117.

* In addition to the benefits listed on the benefits tab, employees with less than 2 years of service will receive .25 per hour less than the hourly salary table due to a mandatory contribution toward the Teamsters Pension Trust that was voted by members of the collective bargaining agreement between our office and Teamsters Local No. 117. This contribution is made by the employee and after two years it is paid by the employer.
- Provide administrative support to the District Court deputies that work in Redmond.
- Assist prosecutors in all phases of trial preparation (post-filing); prepare, type and process numerous legal documents.
- Daily calendar preparation in PbK; maintain PbK to reflect updated witness information and court dates.
- Generate and process witness letters and subpoenas; schedule and track subpoenaed witnesses for hearings in PbK.
- Serve as a liaison between victims and DPAs by sending restitution packets to victims, collecting restitution documentation, and providing all received materials to DPAs (via PbK) for case processing.
- Communicate and serve as a liaison with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, witnesses, victims, and other agencies.
- Coordinate and locate witnesses; explain legal procedures to victims, witnesses, and the public; request interpreters for trial testimony; and coordinate travel and lodging arrangements.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining records and assisting Vice Chairs for all Motions to Vacate in DCU.
- Answer phone calls and respond to e-mails in a timely manner.
- Assist LSP Supervisor, Unit Chair and Vice Chairs as requested.
- Perform related work or other projects as requested or required.
- Additional responsibilities and/or tasks may be incorporated, or existing ones modified as business needs evolve.
- Active participation in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions.
- Provide support for the Race, Equity and Social Justice policy and principles and work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvement are requisite.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims, and other agencies.
- Skills in responding in a positive, mature, and helpful manner with numerous individuals including witnesses who may be in various emotional states and reluctant to assist with prosecution.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills to make decisions and initiate action.
- Time management skills to handle multiple tasks often effectively and accurately within short deadlines.
- Ability to handle emergency situations and work under pressure.
- Skill in using computers and a variety of software such as Prosecutor by Karpel (with training), Word, Adobe Pro and Excel; familiarity with other criminal justice programs is a plus.
- Knowledge of legal office practices and procedures, particularly in the Mainstream Criminal Division.
- Must have demonstrated predictable and reliable attendance.
- Must be able and willing to accept supervision, feedback, and coaching.
- Desire to work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvement.
