About the role

The GLights Market Strategist role is responsible for providing analysis of the European Gasoline and Light Ends markets to identify trading opportunities and support trading decisions and commercial performance of the Europe and wider Global Light-ends trading bench.

Adept at developing partnerships across trading and analytics, the market strategist develops networks that stretch cross-geography and cross-commodity. They employ the full suite of skills and capabilities that reside within our strong multidisciplinary analytics team, connecting data, analysis and insight.

Key Responsibilities

A successful candidate is able to challenge and influence risk deployment across the European GLights books. Building strong trust and partnership with traders by delivering innovative and accurate fundamental insights. Complex insights and market observations are able to be communicated with speed, impact and due regard to the inherent risks and uncertainties.

The role will include construction of various fundamental and economic models to evaluate key factors that impact the European gasoline market and it’s interaction with other regions. This includes maintaining supply/demand models and analyzing/forecasting various aspects of the market e.g. production, blending, yields, trade flows (i.e., imports and exports), impact of regulatory changes, new technologies, storage, etc.

Essential education, experience and requirements

  • Professional and/or academic analytical background with knowledge of energy commodity markets that includes:
  • Working knowledge of European Energy markets e.g. data sources, refineries, logistics
  • Understanding of light ends markets;
  • Understanding of refining, petrochemical and blending processes;
  • Understanding of commodities price theory, including fundamental drivers of supply, demand, trade flows, prices and the mutual interaction of each.
  • Commercial competence - Ability to review and analyze large amounts of data with a high level of attention to detail and problem solving attitude. Adept at formulating short and mid-term supply/demand forecasts and drawing relevant commercial insights for the business.
  • Fundamental analysis – Strong analytical thinker able to organize large amounts of information in systematic ways. Intuitively understand crucial data/process/signals in fundamental analysis. Knowledge and application of economic principles and statistical analysis.
  • Communication – Excellent written and verbal communication skills, having the talent to communicate complex analysis and forecasts clearly and optimally with resulting commercial impact to traders, marketers and management.
  • Technical – Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint and preferably python and/or Dataiku.
  • Compliance - Strong sense of integrity, professional conduct and control and compliance awareness.

You will work with

The successful candidate will work as part of the trading analytics and insights (TA&I) team, drawing on the global team’s data, insights and knowledge base. The primary interested parties that the successful candidates will be working with day to day are the European and global gasoline traders within the light ends trading bench which encompasses all of bp’s global trading across products such as petrochemicals, ethane, LPG, naphtha, ethanol and gasoline. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to help us build on our competitive advantage and deliver on the trading organization’s overall strategy.

Trading analytics and insight (TA&I) partner with commercial decision makers within Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) to deliver distinctive incremental value through outstanding analytics and innovative solutions, while also using capabilities to underpin our commercial delivery.

Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) is bp's face to the traded markets in oil, gas, power, chemicals, renewables and finance.
