Job Overview
The Department Senior plays a critical role within the production environment, serving as a key driver of safety, quality, performance, and team development. This position is responsible for modeling and coaching best practices across core operational areas, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and fostering a positive and inclusive team culture. Acting as an informal leader, the Department Senior ensures consistent execution of standard operating procedures, promotes cross-training, and supports the development of team members through hands-on training and mentorship.
The role requires a proactive, dependable individual who demonstrates strong communication skills, adaptability, and a commitment to company values. The Department Senior collaborates closely with line safety, leadership, engineering, and quality assurance to maintain high standards and drive operational excellence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS – Associates are required to stand or walk on a concrete floor surface for up to a ten-hour shift. Associates must be able to perform repetitive hand, wrist and arm motions, including reaching above the shoulders. Associates must also be able to bend, stoop, and turn. Highlights of your role
- Safety – Champion a culture of safety by consistently modeling and coaching safe work practices and ergonomic behaviors. Proactively identify and report hazards; lead by example in safety audits, incident reporting, and corrective actions. Ensure team adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements; coach peers on safe behaviors and risk mitigation.
- Housekeeping – Maintain a safe, clean, organized work environment; lead by example in applying 5S principles (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain). Encourage team ownership of workspace cleanliness and organization.
- Quality – Lead by example in understanding and maintaining high-quality standards; ensure team members understand and follow specifications. Partner with Quality Assurance to investigate defects, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous quality improvement. Conduct regular in-process Quality Verification Audits and spot checks; provide immediate feedback and coaching to uphold quality expectations. First point of contact when quality issues arise. Identify and address line level root cause in quality issues stemming from Evident Quality Audits.
- Production – Identify and resolve workflow bottlenecks; escalate issues promptly to minimize downtime and maintain throughput. Operate efficiently in assigned production areas to meet or exceed daily output targets while maintaining Safety and Quality. Monitor and communicate production metrics; support data-driven decision-making and continuous performance improvement. Utilize Lean principles to increase efficiency.
- Training & Development – Provide hands-on training for new and existing employees on SOS/SOPs, safety practices, and quality standards. Collaborate with leadership and engineering to update, validate, and improve training materials and SOS/SOPs. Support peer-to-peer learning and skill development across the team within your assigned area.
- People & Culture – Serve as a reliable point of contact and informal leader for your assigned area, acting as a mentor for others on your team. Demonstrate effective leadership behaviors, including clear communication and task delegation relative to line balancing within your area. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment through encouragement, recognition, and cell line balance, actively contributing to team morale. Embody company values in daily actions and decisions, holding yourself to a higher standard.
- Flexibility & Cross-Training – Demonstrate adaptability by learning new processes and equipment to support team flexibility. Pursue cross-training opportunities throughout the production line to enhance knowledge and effectively train others.
