Description
A day in the life as a Wood Rodgers' Biologist
- Conduct literature research and biological record searches.
- Complete biological field surveys, consisting of general biological reconnaissance, wildlife habitat assessments, wetland delineations, focused botanical surveys, etc.
- Collect field data using handheld GPS devices.
- Develop solutions for complex biological settings.
- Write technical reports supporting survey and monitoring results, including but not limited to, Biological Resources Reports, Biological Assessments, Natural Environment Study, Water Quality Assessment Reports, migratory nesting bird survey reports, daily monitoring logs of environmental commitments, monthly compliance reports, restoration site monitoring reports, etc.
- Prepare and secure regulatory permits including but not limited to Clean Water Act Section 404 and Section 401, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Section 1602, Federal and State Endangered Species Take Authorizations, etc.
- Occasionally monitor environmental commitments and regulatory permit conservation measures at active construction sites throughout California.
- Communicate clearly and confidently with interdisciplinary internal staff members, clients, and regulatory agencies.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental planning, or related environmental science field.
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in biological resources consulting or environmental planning in California, including biological surveys, preparing technical studies, and biological monitoring.
- Solid understanding of federal and California environmental regulations, including the Endangered Species Acts, Clean Water Act, NEPA, and CEQA.
- Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills with experience preparing environmental studies and reports.
- Proficiency in GPS/GIS applications and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and skilled in time management with the ability to work independently and in team environments.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk for the entire duration of workday.
- Ability to travel to job sites (possibly for multiple days), including travel throughout California.
- Ability to work in the outdoor environment with physical demands, including but not limited to hiking/walking distances on uneven terrain, contact with insects and wildlife, as well as variable weather conditions, such as elevated temperatures (high or low) and inclement weather.
