Position Purpose

The Center for Electromechanics (CEM), a secure applied research laboratory within the Cockrell School of Engineering, is seeking a motivated part-time student to join our administrative team for the Fall 2026 semester. Working at the front reception desk, the student will gain valuable professional experience while supporting daily office operations, assisting visitors, and contributing to a collaborative research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact for visitors by greeting guests, checking them in, and ensuring they are successfully connected with their CEM host.

  • Receive, process, and distribute incoming mail, packages, and deliveries; coordinate courier services; and assist with directing facility, maintenance, and IT service personnel.

  • Assist with scanning, organizing, and digitizing departmental records to support electronic recordkeeping.

  • Provide general administrative support, including filing, data entry, document preparation, and other office tasks as assigned.

  • Contribute to the smooth day-to-day operation of the front office while maintaining a professional, welcoming, and secure environment.


 

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a University of Texas at Austin undergraduate student and registered for at least 12 credit hours during the Fall 2026 semester.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams) and the Windows operating system.

  • Familiarity with standard office equipment, including multifunction printers/copiers, scanners, telephones, and other office technology.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong organizational abilities and exceptional attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and collaborate effectively as part of a team.

  • Professional, dependable, and customer-service oriented with a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a receptionist, administrative, customer service, or office support role.

  • Classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior at The University of Texas at Austin.

  • Interest in gaining experience in a collaborative engineering research setting.


Salary Range

$15 - $18/hour (depending on qualifications)

Work Shift

Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM
