Description
When you join Verizon

At Verizon, we power and empower how people live, work and play by connecting them to what brings them joy. We do what we love — driving innovation, creativity, and impact in the world. Our V Team is a community of people who anticipate, lead, and believe that listening is where learning begins. In crisis and in celebration, we come together — lifting our communities and building trust in how we show up, everywhere & always. Want in? Join the #VTeamLife.
What you’ll be doing:
You will oversee the design, deployment, and integration of health and safety programs for thousands of field technicians and facilities personnel. Your mission is simple to state but complex to execute: ensure every person returns home safely every day, while enabling operational speed and efficiency.
You will lead a distributed team of regional safety managers, the Corporate Industrial Hygienist, and the Verizon Ergonomist, and collaborate directly with the AVP of EHS and operations partners.
Responsibilities will include:
Defining the multi-year EHS roadmap for H&S. Using risk assessment results to prioritize tasks. Communicating and collaborating with internal partners and union representatives on safety programs, practices, and training requirements.
Leading a team of H&S professionals. Developing their skills to ensure they have technical and functional capabilities.
Designing and implementing rigorous safety protocols tailored to risks to reduce serious incidents and fatalities, including electrical safety, confined space, trenching/excavation, work at height, and complex traffic control.
Transitioning the organization from reactive metrics and compliance to predictive safety. Build and leverage leading-indicator dashboards to identify risk trends before incidents occur.
Overseeing the investigation of all critical incidents, ensuring that root cause analysis triggers systemic operational changes through the use of the hierarchy of controls. Serving as the primary point of contact with federal and state regulatory bodies (e.g., OSHA).
Cultivating a progressive, human-organizational performance (HOP) safety culture in which field teams feel psychologically safe reporting near-misses and using learning teams to understand the operational reality of high-risk work and collaborate on safety innovations.
Assisting the field with contractor safety management, as needed.
Partnering with Risk Management on injuries related to workers' comp claims.
What we’re looking for:
An effective leader who motivates and inspires a team that develops and implements programs for Health and Safety. Should have implementation and oversight experience for H&S-related disciplines, with proven field experience and H&S regulatory knowledge.
Demonstrate strong collaboration and communication skills; strong writing, research, and analytical skills. Results-driven, detail-oriented, and can work in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Anticipate needs and issues and proactively identify appropriate solutions—strong ability to work independently and multitask, with the ability to maintain confidential information.
You’ll need to have:
Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
Eight or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.
EHS work experience in engineering, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental discipline, or equivalent technical field.
Experience with EHS compliance and regulations.
Even better if you have one or more of the following:
Bachelor's or advanced degree in an EHS-related discipline.
Experience managing people.
Demonstrated collaboration skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels of the organization.
Telecommunications industry experience.
Professional certification (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist).
Experience with Google Suite (docs, sheets, slides, etc.).
Experience working with unions.
If Verizon and this role sound like a fit for you, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every “even better” qualification listed above.
