Position Overview
The Career Advisor is a student-facing role responsible for delivering career counseling, leading skill-building workshops, and managing digital platforms. The Career Advisor provides comprehensive administrative and logistical support for career events and data collection initiatives, ensuring all programming aligns with departmental strategies, institutional goals, and evolving global market trends.
Career Counseling and Coaching - 40%
• Counsel, advise, and support students regarding career exploration, career decision-making and other career-related concerns. Utilizes both a theoretical and a practical understanding of career development to assist students in assessing their career goals and gaining skills to enhance their employability.
• Develops action plans with students to match interests, values and skills towards achieving professional pursuits.
• Provides career counseling to students and alumni through administration and interpretation of various vocational tests, career exploration tools and inventories during individual or group career coaching sessions. Uses a student-centered approach to help students identify their strengths, refine their skills and articulate their value to employers. Assists with resume development, cover letter writing, LinkedIn profile review, and application materials.
• Provides guidance on graduate school applications and mock interviews, and refers students to appropriate university resources when needed.
• Offers career transition support including salary negotiation coaching.
Career Program Development - 45%
• Develops and delivers a comprehensive program targeting students’ professional development throughout their undergraduate education.
• Creates and presents career-related workshops for career exploration and career readiness skills to ensure preparedness for job fairs and graduate school options.
• Works collaboratively with faculty, student organizations and student class representatives to develop tailored class presentations and targeted career readiness programming.
• Handles student focused workshops around: resume and CV writing, elevator pitch, technology tools utilization (ex. generative AI) in career preparation, and interview preparedness, and other skill-building content.
• Organizes annual events to support career exploration and graduate school exploration: Graduate School series and Tartan Talks with Alumni.
• Supports career mentoring programs to connect students with industry partners and alumni.
• Trains and Coaches students in preparation for the Internship Showcase and related career skills presentations/events.
• Supports the creation of content and marketing materials across print, digital, and social media platforms to maximize student engagement.
Data Collection and Technology Management - 10%
• Support the collection of first-destination student employment outcomes for recent graduates.
• Manage and optimize career management systems and online career exploration resources (i.e. Handshake, VMock, CMUniverse, etc.).
• Review student resumes and collate data for the CMUQ Student Resume Book (twice a year)
• Maintain and update internal career resources and career assessment tools and digital resource library.
• Coordinate implementation of new career technologies and resource tools and disseminate to community
• Assist with designing and implementing assessment surveys to support continuous improvement.
Service to Community – 5%
• Contributes to the efforts of the Student Affairs team. Engages in university outreach events like Marhaba Tartans, supports graduation and convocation ceremonies, etc. Also supports multiversity initiatives to support career readiness across Education City
Qualifications & Skills:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or unrelated field when paired with relevant professional certifications and practical experience).
• 2 to 5 years of experience in career services, student affairs, or human resources preferably in a local or regional context.
• Experience providing student-facing support, including reviewing resumes and cover letters, conducting mock interviews, and guiding students through career or graduate school planning.
• Proven ability to plan, organize, and execute full operational logistics for workshops, career fairs, and other employer engagement events with strong attention to detail.
• Proven ability to connect easily with a diverse student body and network effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated public speaking skills with experience delivering interactive workshops and presentations to diverse student groups
• Ability to create engaging promotional materials (newsletters, social media, digital signage) to boost student engagement.
• Excellent writing, presentation, and organizational skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Energetic, dependable, resourceful, and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
Preferred:
• Arabic language
• Familiarity with the job market in Qatar and the GCC/MENA region.
• Experience with career services platforms and educational tools (e.g., Handshake, VMock, Big Interview, Canvas)
• Strong aptitude for learning new digital tools and managing online databases.
