Description

We’re looking for experienced professionals with a strong background in concrete and paving work. Ideal candidates will have hands-on experience with patching, overlay paving, and crack sealing, along with the ability to operate equipment such as rollers, skid steers, screeds, and pavers.
A solid understanding of paving practices and principles is also important. If your experience aligns with these skills, we encourage you to apply!
Required Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
- Two (2) years of equipment operation, general construction, maintenance experience, or combination to successfully perform the duties of the job.
- Completion of a one (1) year Construction Technology certificate program may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Special Qualifications:
- Possession of a Class A Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain CDL and tanker endorsement within one (1) year of hire date. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
- Maintaining a CDL is a condition of employment.
- Ability to maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
- Must live within a 60-minute response time from the City's Service Center located at 821 N. Columbus Ave.
Available Schedule:
- Monday - Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM (four 10-hour days with three days off each week)

- Creates, installs, inspects, repairs, and alters a variety of signs, systems, equipment, structures, and facilities, maintains, repairs, and cleans streets, sewer lines, storm drainage infrastructure, bridges, pump stations, grounds, and facilities.
- Performs manual labor activities, which may include excavating, grading, sidewalks, or underground utilities and cleaning up debris and cutting trees and brush.
- Performs work zone traffic control and flagging.
- Routinely drives light to medium duty trucks.
- Operates a variety of equipment and/or large trucks which may include backhoes, skid steers, line stripers, dump trucks, mowers, combination vacuum trucks, excavators, pavers, loaders, rollers, water trucks, street sweepers, etc.
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand and/or power tools, which may include concrete saws, mixers, chain saws, jack hammers, pumps, and/or a variety of other equipment.
- Completes and maintains a variety of logs, documents, maps, and reports regarding materials handled, equipment operations, mileage, fuel, and oil used, and other related information.
- Performs emergency services during adverse weather conditions, which may include removing snow and debris from roadways, sanding roads, high water response, downed trees, or limbs in the Right-of-Way, etc.
- Responds to varying situations: motor vehicle accident clean-up and traffic control, sewer and storm drainage concerns, spill response and clean up, and hazard removal from the right-of-way.
- Responds to afterhours and weekend service calls as needed. Can be placed on-call.
- The scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director.
Examples of responsibilities assigned to various sections may include:
- Storm Section: Maintenance and repair of storm drainage infrastructure including piping, culverts, street sweeping, control structures, and water quality structures; a variety of vegetation management including mowing easements, ditches, City lots, and roadsides. Performs confined space entry.
- Sewer Section: Maintenance, inspection, and repair of sewer infrastructure, including piping and pump stations. Performs confined space entry.
- Traffic Section: Planning and participating in signing and striping maintenance, pavement markings, design and layout, sign construction and installation, and operation and maintenance of paint striping equipment.
- Surface Section: Monitoring and participating in asphalt, concrete and surfaced right-of-way maintenance, and rehabilitation; bridge repair. Scheduling equipment and material use; coordinating transportation issues.
- Quick Response Team: Provides initial response to requests for service, perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed, refers service requests to and coordinates work with other sections, daily interaction with the public, and acts as primary back up to Utility Locator.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
This position requires work that includes exposure to regular inside and outside noise and distractions, lighting, and HVAC systems in relation to temperature. This environment also includes interactions with the public, contact with hot and cold temperatures and a large variety of potential health and safety exposures.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential job functions satisfactorily. This position involves extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, crouching, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, climbing and balancing, regular limb extension, pinching and grasping, moving, lifting and carrying objects that will require frequent force of 0 – 25 pounds, occasional 26 – 74 pounds and seldom exertion of 75 - 100 pounds of force, as well as regular keyboard typing, talking and listening both in person and over the phone, and driving a wide array of motorized vehicles in all conditions. Noise exposure and hot/cold environments may also need to be tolerated. Must have the ability to use computers, phones, and technology as needed.
