Northrop Grumman Space Sector has an immediate opening for a Milling Machine Machinist 4 (2nd Shift - 3:30 PM to 12 AM) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be in Redondo Beach, California.

 

The ideal candidate will be an experienced CNC turning machinist with a strong focus on 2‑axis lathes, lathes with live tooling, Tsugami (or similar) Swiss turning, and mill‑turn centers. They will be capable of independently setting up and operating CNC and manual equipment to produce complex aerospace hardware in accordance with NG Space procedures. The candidate will be comfortable machining a range of materials, interpreting engineering drawings and models with GD&T, and planning and executing turning and mill‑turn operations from setup through final inspection. They will select appropriate turning tooling and work holding (e.g., chucks, collets, bar feeders, sub‑spindle/tailstock), set and verify work and tool offsets, create, adjust, and optimize CNC programs at the machine, and resolve common machining issues to protect quality, schedule, and cost. The machinist will use precision measurement tools to validate product conformance, follow workmanship, FOD control, handling, and special process requirements, and maintain a clean, safe, and audit‑ready work area.

In addition, the ideal candidate will mentor junior machinists and apprentices, collaborate effectively with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Planning, and Production to improve manufacturability, actively support continuous improvement (e.g., 5S and lean practices), and leverage CAM tools such as Mastercam (2020 or higher), Vericut, Catia, and NX to enhance process robustness and repeatability.

Basic Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D) plus 6 years of experience as a CNC Programmer or Machinist.
• Proficiency in programming skills using Mastercam, Smartcam, or GIBBS required.
• Experience in Swiss‑type turning (e.g., Tsugami) and/or mill‑turn operations.
• Experience in multi‑axis machining and turning with live tooling.
• Experience in high‑speed machining.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings / GD&T.
• Proficiency with precision measuring tools and basic inspection documentation.
• Working knowledge of feeds/speeds, tool selection, and work holding for common aerospace materials (e.g., aluminum, titanium, stainless steels).
• Experience working from travelers/operation sheets and controlled process documentation in an AS9100 compliant or similar environment.
• Must be able to work 2nd shift (3:30 PM to 12 AM).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Experience machining space or aerospace hardware, preferably for NG Space or similar organizations.
• Familiarity with NG Space or equivalent machining‑related procedures, special process specifications, and workmanship standards.
• To include CNC Milling capability to set up and operate CNC milling machines or multi‑axis machining centers for complex, tight‑tolerance features and prismatic work.
• Experience with common CNC controls (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, Mazak, or similar), including basic program edits and troubleshooting.
• Experience with Vericut, NX, Catia5, and AutoCAD.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Participation in MRB, corrective actions, or lean/continuous improvement activities.
• Experience training or assisting less experienced machinists on setups and best practices.
• Ability to work effectively in a team setting and communicate clearly with peers and support functions.
• Ability to guide apprentices in the Apprentice Program as a Mentor.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required company and/or government clearances.
• Demonstrated ability to set up and operate CNC milling machines for moderately complex, tight‑tolerance parts with limited supervision.
• Conventional machining background.

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards 

Primary Level Salary Range: $86,300.00 - $143,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
