Mō te tūranga | About the role 

As a Ranger Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitors, you will play a key role supporting the delivery of the Murihiku Subantarctic Programme.


You'll coordinate tourism operations, visitor monitoring, regulatory compliance, and visitor management activities that support sustainable access to New Zealand's Subantarctic Islands. 


Based in Invercargill, you'll work closely with tourism operators, cruise ship providers, government agencies, and other stakeholders to deliver visitor management programmes and support conservation outcomes in this globally significant environment. 


Your focus will include: 

  • Coordinate tourism activities and visitor access within the Murihiku Subantarctic programme.  
  • Manage visitor monitoring and reporting requirements.  
  • Support regulatory compliance and concession management activities.  
  • Coordinate cruise ship visits and associated operational requirements.  
  • Support delivery of the Government Observer Programme.  
  • Manage invoicing and associated financial administration processes.  
  • Maintain positive relationships with tourism operators, concessionaires, and partner agencies.  
  • Support DOC's visitor management and Conservation Management Strategy obligations.  
  • Contribute to planning, reporting, and programme delivery across the Subantarctic team.  
  • Provide operational and administrative support for Subantarctic projects and activities.

We are looking for someone who can confidently manage multiple priorities while building positive working relationships across a diverse stakeholder network. 


Ideal candidates will have: 

  • Experience coordinating operational programmes involving multiple stakeholders.  
  • Strong relationship management skills and the ability to influence positive outcomes.  
  • Experience administering contracts, concessions, permits, or compliance processes 
  • Experience in operational coordination, administration, logistics, visitor management, tourism, or a related field.  
  • Strong planning and organisational skills.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Experience managing relationships with external stakeholders and partners.  
  • The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.  
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.  
  • Confidence working with systems, reporting tools, and the Microsoft Office suite.  
  • Sound judgement and problem-solving abilities.  
  • A commitment to conservation and public service outcomes. 

 

Desirable: 

  • Knowledge of concession management or regulatory compliance processes.  
  • Experience working with tourism operators or the maritime sector.  
  • Experience coordinating projects, programmes, or operational logistics.  
  • An understanding of DOC's conservation and visitor management responsibilities.
