The Principal Technologist - Resiliency & Availability serves as Infrastructure Technology’s recognized authority for resiliency, availability, cyber recovery, disaster recovery, and data protection capabilities.
This role is responsible for assessing, advancing, and continuously challenging Infrastructure Technology’s resiliency, recovery, data protection, and availability capabilities across servers, storage, networking, databases, middleware, platform services, mainframe, and cloud technologies.
The position partners closely with architects, engineers, technology leaders, and application teams to ensure capabilities remain effective, aligned with evolving business requirements, and capable of meeting modern expectations for reliability, recoverability, and operational readiness.
The Principal Technologist maintains an enterprise-wide view of resiliency and recovery capabilities, identifying gaps, opportunities, and emerging risks while driving adoption of modern, best-in-class resiliency and recovery capabilities. The role serves as the authoritative source for understanding and communicating Infrastructure Technology’s resiliency posture, operational readiness, planned improvements, and recovery effectiveness.
The position also plays a key role in supporting audit, regulatory, and risk management activities, while helping ensure capabilities can be clearly demonstrated, validated, and continuously improved.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of resiliency, availability, cyber recovery, disaster recovery, and data protection capabilities across Infrastructure Technology.
- Assess capability maturity and identify opportunities to improve resilience, recoverability, operational readiness, and customer outcomes.
- Drive adoption of modern, best-in-class resiliency, recovery, and availability capabilities.
- Partner with architects, engineers, technology leaders, and application teams to evolve capabilities as technologies, threats, customer expectations, and business requirements change.
- Identify capability gaps, operational weaknesses, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities across infrastructure domains.
- Influence strategic roadmaps and investment priorities that strengthen resiliency and recovery outcomes.
- Develop business cases supporting resiliency, availability, cyber recovery, and data protection investments.
- Quantify business value, operational benefits, customer impact, and risk reduction associated with improvement initiatives.
- Create executive presentations, strategy documents, maturity assessments, capability guides, standards mappings, and supporting documentation.
- Translate complex technical capabilities into clear, consumable content for executive, business, audit, risk, and regulatory audiences.
- Serve as the primary authority for explaining current-state capabilities, planned improvements, operational effectiveness, and recovery readiness.
- Challenge technology domains to demonstrate that capabilities are operating as designed and achieving intended outcomes.
- Validate capabilities against documented recovery objectives, resiliency standards, business requirements, and expected outcomes.
- Ensure evidence, documentation, and supporting materials accurately reflect implemented capabilities and operational reality.
- Drive accountability and remediation efforts when capability gaps, weaknesses, or risks are identified.
- Partner with Corporate Risk, Audit Services, and regulatory organizations to support reviews, examinations, and ongoing oversight activities.
Required Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in infrastructure technology, architecture, engineering, platform services, resiliency, availability, cyber recovery, data protection, or related disciplines.
- Extensive experience in infrastructure technology, architecture, engineering, platform services, or related disciplines.
- Broad technical expertise spanning multiple infrastructure domains, including servers, storage, networking, databases, middleware, cloud, platform services, and mainframe technologies.
- Strong understanding of resiliency, availability, disaster recovery, cyber recovery, and data protection concepts.
- Experience assessing technology capabilities, identifying improvement opportunities, and influencing strategic roadmaps.
- Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes and drive organizational change without direct authority.
- Experience developing executive communications, strategy documents, business cases, presentations, and technical narratives.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience within large-scale, highly regulated technology organizations.
- Experience supporting technology audits, regulatory examinations, or risk management programs.
- Experience performing capability maturity assessments and developing capability improvement roadmaps.
- Experience supporting enterprise resiliency, recovery, and application availability strategies.
- Financial services industry experience.
Critical Success Characteristics
The successful candidate:
- Operates independently with minimal oversight.
- Identifies opportunities and takes action without being directed.
- Demonstrates persistence, curiosity, and accountability.
- Builds strong relationships across engineering, architecture, application, risk, audit, and leadership organizations.
- Influences decisions through expertise, credibility, and collaboration rather than authority.
- Challenges assumptions and drives fact-based decisions.
- Maintains a strong bias for action and continuous improvement.
- Is equally comfortable engaging executives, auditors, regulators, architects, engineers, and application teams.
- Works effectively at strategic, tactical, and detailed levels to assess, improve, validate, and communicate organizational capabilities.
- Takes ownership for understanding how capabilities actually operate, not simply how they are documented.
