Position Overview

What awaits you:

Operation of plant and equipment to recycle scrap aluminium into sheet ingot. Main activities include driving forklift trucks, working with overhead cranes and scrap and molten aluminium.

Assembling and weighing scrap mixes for charges; charging scrap to furnaces; metal sampling, analysis and compositional control; furnace cleaning; molten metal transfer; molten metal casting; ingot movement / identification; quality checks.

Unloading scrap from vehicles; scrap quality checks; assembling scrap mixes; feeding the shredder; molten metal sampling, analysis and compositional control; furnace cleaning; molten metal transfer; molten metal casting; ingot movement / identification; quality checks; ingot despatch

Responsibilities & Qualifications

How you convince us:

The Operators usually work in teams of 3 or 4, reporting to a team leader who in turn reports to the Shift Leader. The Operators are expected to perform duties within either of the two foundries and these include basic maintenance work.

Equipment includes Fork Lift Trucks from 3t - 16t., JCB bucket, heavy duty articulated machines, overhead cranes up to 43t lifting capacity, a shredder, a variety of conveying equipment, an ingot saw, 5 fume treatment plants, 7 melting furnaces, 3 holding furnaces and 2 preheating furnaces.

There are different physical requirements for different areas of the plant. In the Melt and DC areas Operators will be required to work in close proximity to molten aluminium at approximately 725°C. In the Yard and the Shredding, area of the UBC a high proportion of the day will be spent driving forklift trucks and other mobile equipment. In all areas, there are some manual tasks to be completed with the melt area in the UBC and the DC area in the GPP being the most demanding.

All Operators are expected to work in either plant once training has been successfully completed and are expected to work safely and in an environmentally acceptable manner at all times.

Location Profile

The Novelis Latchford plant a suburb of Warrington Cheshire in England employs approximately 200 employees. It is one of Europe’s largest aluminium used beverage cans recycling plants and Europe’s largest closed-loop recycling operation for automotive aluminium rolled products with an annual recycling capacity of up to 195000 tonnes. The plant is an essential part of Novelis’ European production and collaborated with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to create the first closed-loop system in Europe with a dedicated railway service to efficiently deliver aluminium between Novelis and JLR’s production site in the UK.

The Latchford plant is committed to its community in supporting math and science education to local schools as well as sharing the value of safety and works with a local charitable foundation to sponsoring health. In addition Novelis UK supports the program “Every Can Counts” to actively promote can recycling across Europe.
