Description
- Maintains a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude toward customers at all times.
- Provides food and water for animal in the shelter and adoption center.
- Cleans and disinfects the kennels, hallways, and shelter; provides clean bedding as required.
- Assists in the adoption process such as providing adoption counseling to determine best match; processes adoptions on the computer.
- Updates, edits, and corrects data files on animals in the kennel.
- Maintains proper inventory levels of cleaning and other supplies, and notifies supervisor when reordering is necessary.
- Takes reports from the public, receives animals brought to the shelter, and administers reclaiming animals to their owners.
- Works with and provides oversight of volunteers
- Performs other assigned duties.
- Knowledge of laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the control of dogs and the protection of livestock and fowl.
- Knowledge of the care, control, and handling of dogs and other animals.
- Knowledge of methods and procedures used to capture and dispose of such animals.
- Knowledge of behaviors and body language of animals.
- Knowledge of basic first aid.
- Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions/procedures as provided by the veterinarian and department director.
- Ability to record activities clearly and accurately.
- Ability to recognize symptoms of rabies displayed in a variety of animals.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- One (1) year of prior working experience involving animal care preferred;
- Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
- Criminal background check and drug screen required.
- Must have the ability to receive Rabies vaccinations.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid State of Virginia Driver’s License with a driving record that meets HR Policy requirements.
