Description
Hours: School days, approximately 7:45 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
The following duties are illustrative and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned.
- Safely assist school-age children in crossing streets at designated school crossings before and after school at AB Elementary School.
- Control and direct vehicular traffic at assigned intersections and crossings to create safe crossing opportunities for pedestrians.
- Instruct and guide children in the proper use of crosswalks and safe pedestrian practices.
- Place traffic cones and other assigned safety devices at designated crossing locations prior to duty and remove them at the conclusion of duty.
- Observe traffic conditions and use appropriate hand signals, verbal instructions, and crossing procedures to manage pedestrian movement and traffic flow.
- Monitor compliance with traffic laws and crossing procedures by motorists and pedestrians.
- Record identifying information regarding vehicles that disregard traffic controls, endanger pedestrians, or otherwise create unsafe conditions, and report violations or concerns to the appropriate law enforcement personnel or supervisor.
- Report hazardous conditions, traffic safety concerns, accidents, incidents, or recurring problems to the supervisor.
- Maintain alertness and exercise sound judgment at all times while working in and around active traffic areas.
- Communicate courteously and effectively with children, parents, school personnel, motorists, law enforcement personnel, and the public.
- Perform related work or other duties as required.
- Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, pedestrian safety practices, and school crossing procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to observe traffic conditions and make sound decisions quickly in the interest of public safety.
- Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with children, parents, school personnel, law enforcement personnel, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain composure and exercise good judgment in stressful or high-traffic situations.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to prepare simple reports or relay information regarding incidents, hazards, or traffic violations.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during assigned shifts.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and wind.
- Ability to safely work in close proximity to moving vehicles and active traffic.
- Ability to see, hear, speak, and use hand/arm signals sufficiently to monitor surroundings, communicate with pedestrians and motorists, and perform crossing duties safely.
- Ability to lift, carry, place, and remove traffic cones or similar equipment used in crossing operations.
- Must be reliable and punctual for scheduled school crossing assignments.
- May be required to pass a background screening and any job-related training required by the City.
- Must wear assigned safety equipment and comply with all City and departmental safety procedures.
