The University of Miami has a great opportunity for a Police Sergeant to work at the Coral Gables Campus.
Sergeants should have the ability to perform as an officer with added supervisory obligations. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification (May do some or all of these duties based upon assignment).
Supervisors are accountable for the performance of their immediate subordinates and their accountability requires supervision of the daily operations of his/her shift. Sergeants are to exhibit performance and model behavior for personnel under their command to shadow.
As first line supervisors, Sergeant’s will immediately report via chain of command all serious criminal incidents, and incidents where there may be a question as to the Department’s liability, and incidents which may result in heightened community interest, and all unusual occurrences. At the discretion of the Chief of Police a Sergeant may be assigned to various line supervision roles to include patrol, investigations, or administrative units. Responsibilities and specific duties may vary based on assignment.
Responsibilities:
- Perform in a manner consistent with the University’s Culture Change, Common Propose, DIRECCT Values and service standards.
- Prepare and present daily roll call and associated training.
- Participate in police patrol, investigative, and regulatory activities.
- Perform generalized duties in the street, at the scene of serious crime and at police headquarters.
- Perform generalized investigative duties and support assigned staff in investigative responsibilities.
- Conduct through inspections (vehicle, personnel and workspace), to assure staff have all required equipment, gear, uniform/attire in order to maintain officer safety and present a positive department image.
- Supervisors will monitor the use official radio channels in accordance with established procedures, and will avoid use of sarcasm, impertinent remarks, or other improper radio transmissions. They will also monitor to assure officer safety.
- Assume complete charge in the absence of a superior officer. Although work is performed in accordance with general departmental policies and procedures, the sergeant must exercise initiative in applying them to specific situations as they arise.
- Is given specific work instructions by superior officers on new assignments but works with considerable independence in performing regularly assigned duties.
- Prepare performance appraisals as required.
- Utilize University human resources software for self and staff for time and attendance, leave, and performance.
- Work is reviewed by inspection, observation of results, and through oral and written reports.
- Supervisors will ensure that all related reports are forwarded to the proper channels prior to their transfer of duty.
- Ensure development and proper handling of intelligence and BOLO information.
- As assigned, responsible for investigative case management, ensure proper case file maintenance,
- As assigned, responsible for quartermaster duties, equipment, facility management, fleet management and other tasks related to maintenance of equipment and workspace.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge:
- Modern police patrol methods and techniques practices
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of laws; County and City ordinances, rules, policies, and procedures of the City and the Department. Personnel will also acquire and maintain a working knowledge of the operations manual for their respective Division, Section, and Unit.
- Knowledge of University Policies and Procedure and Student’s Rights and Responsibilities
- Knowledge and responsibility to balance their position to make decisions necessary for the effective execution of their duties. All personnel are fully accountable for the use or misuse of authority and/or the failure to use that authority.
- Geography of the City of Coral Gables, University of Miami campus and their buildings and other relevant venues
- Case management, and maintenance of investigative files

Skills:

Abilities:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, associates, and the public

- Capacity to prepare and maintain clear, concise and accurate reports
- Capable to administer first aid
- Proficiency to plan, assign, instruct, and review the work of subordinates
- Capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment; such as but not limited to a personal computer.
- Operate departmental required software: CAD, RMS, MCT, Word Day, Cane Link etc. and ability to learn and utilize newly added software.
- Physical strength and a working knowledge of hand-to-hand technique is required to subdue and restrain suspects
- Capable of monitoring staff schedule to assure proper coverage and proper leave is documented and call outs be filled for proper coverage.
- Approve leave through the use the E-Notify system and assure court attendance
- Collect, analyze and interpret statistics for purposes of response to criminal activity
- Supervisors will certify proper information is entered in the crime log and a complete crime log is submitted at the end of their shift.
- Ability to assign and manage and monitor
- Plan, develop and staff an Operational Plans for a specific event
- Prepare After action reports
- Supervisors will follow proper procedures regarding Remedial Training, Counseling, Discipline, Internal Affairs Investigations, City Rules and Regulations, Departmental Rules and Regulations when investigating possible misuse.
- Supervisors will monitor any possible misuse or excessive use of sick leave privilege; they will review sick leave records and advise their Division Commander in writing. Attention will be given to the frequency of absences as well as the days the absences occur (i.e. adjacent to days off, holidays, vacation, etc.).
- Ability to conduct investigative interviews and evaluate staff skills on same.
- Good communication for both internal and external personnel
- Operation of motor vehicle in both normal and emergency operations
- Aptitude in reviewing and proofreading reports
QUALIFICATIONS
License or certifications
• Valid Florida Driver’s License Required
• Current State of Florida Police Officer
Certification RequiredEducation/Training
• 5 years of continuous service as a full time police officer
• Two-year college degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university.
