The University of Miami School of Law, Environmental Law Program and Environmental Justice Clinic, has a great opportunity for a Senior Manager, Programs, to work at the Coral Gables Campus.

CORE JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Manager of Programs will serve and support the Environment Law Program (ELP) and the Environmental Justice Clinic (EJC), providing administrative and paralegal support to faculty and acting as a liaison between faculty, students, and other units within the University of Miami, alumni, and community members.

Miami Law’s Environmental Law Program (ELP) is unique due to its South Florida location, enabling the focus on the prism of issues affecting the environment — from maritime to real estate to land use to the cruise industry to environmental law to law of the sea. The Program also offers a unique intersectionality with other University of Miami graduate programs in marine affairs, land use, architecture, and business. With a Concentration in Environmental Law and an Environmental Justice Clinic, the program trains students to become future attorneys, policy makers, and scholars in the field of environmental law locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Environmental Justice Clinic (EJC) advocates for and empowers marginalized communities by combining civil rights, environmental, poverty, and public health law with community lawyering principles. EJC is a law clinic that teaches lawyering skills to students and is part of the unified law firm of Miami Law’s in-house law clinics. The EJC is engaged in projects and cases before local, state, and federal administrative tribunals and courts, and other domestic and international fora, as well as other forms of advocacy, including factual investigations, report-writing, law reform and legislative initiatives, and community organizing campaigns.

This position also assists in the development, monitoring, and reporting of departmental budgets.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:

Serves as main point of contact for students and remains available to assist with inquiries. Prepares, maintains, and reports on program effectiveness. Assists with managing program budget by monitoring expenditures. Stays abreast of market trends and legislation impacting program functions. Checks, verifies, organizes, and prepares grants, procurement, and other program relevant documents. Coordinates logistics for program events and activities. Works with other departments to increase program awareness. Identifies new needs and emerging issues and develops new programs, initiatives, and resources. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Department Specific Functions:

Students

Serve as main point of contact for students on administrative matters, including academic advising. Trains and supervises clinical students on office procedures and case management, including Clio, Shared Drives, and clinic emails. Coordinates student recruitment and registration for the law clinics and other ELP programs and courses. Provides day-to-day paralegal support to law student clinical interns on various issues related to managing case and project work.

Communications and Outreach

Coordinates logistics for program events and activities. Serve as a liaison with other UM departments to coordinate joint programs and opportunities. Organize events including conferences, speaker series, and community meetings, Develops strategic partnerships with external entities and organizations. Overseeing the program’s social media presence and helping to maintain the website. Assists with database maintenance, including creating and maintaining mailing lists.

Clinical Support

Serves as the paralegal to the EJC, including but not limited to communicating with clients, judges, and the legal community, assisting with court filings and legal documents, and assisting with the client intake process. Develops, organizes, and maintains the filing systems for clinic classes and a large volume of clinic clients. Manages the law clinic’s electronic case management and online platforms, including Clio, Box, Blackboard, and WorkDay. Maintains office space and supplies, technological repairs, IT/AV/Facilities requests, and Canon service requests.

Faculty Support

Identifies new needs and emerging issues and develops new programs, initiatives, and resources. Coordinates guest visits, including with clients, guest speakers, and visiting faculty. Responds to various instructor requests and telephone, email, and internet submissions for all programs.

Finances

Assists with managing the program budget by monitoring expenditures. Comply with various annual reporting requirements Process program expenditures and coordinate with the law school’s finance team. Checks, verifies, organizes, and prepares grants, procurement, and other program relevant documents. Assists with applications and accountability for external grants and gifts, including coordination with the Office of Research Administration and law school’s finance team; monitoring and reconciling expenditures, and preparing supporting documents Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required, Master’s Degree in relevant field preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
