Overview
The Per Diem Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) will support the conduct of psychiatric clinical research studies by providing clinical care and performing protocol-driven research activities under the direction of study investigators. The APRN will conduct psychiatric and medical assessments, evaluate participants throughout study participation, perform study-related clinical procedures, and contribute to the safe and rigorous conduct of Phase 1 -4 clinical trials. The APRN will participate in studies evaluating investigational and emerging treatments for psychiatric disorders. Responsibilities include recruitment, screening and evaluating potential participants, monitoring participants before, during, and after investigational interventions, identifying and managing changes in clinical status, assessing and documenting adverse events, and communicating clinically significant findings to study investigators, other members of the research team and the patient's mental health clinicians. The position integrates advanced psychiatric clinical practice with clinical research operations and is integral to ensuring participant safety, protocol adherence, regulatory compliance, and the collection of accurate and high-quality clinical data. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include 1. Conducts comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluations of research participants, including medical and psychiatric history, medication review, physical examination, and assessment of eligibility and clinical status. 2. Performs protocol-specified clinical assessments and procedures at screening, baseline, treatment, and follow-up visits. 3. Monitors participants receiving investigational interventions and provides appropriate clinical assessment and management throughout study participation. 4. Identifies, evaluates, manages, and documents adverse events, changes in clinical status, and other safety concerns in accordance with study protocols, institutional requirements, and Good Clinical Practice. 5. Obtains, reviews, and documents relevant clinical data, including medical and psychiatric histories, concomitant medications, vital signs, physical examination findings, progress notes, laboratory results, and other study-related clinical information. 6. Orders and reviews protocol-required laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and other clinical assessments; identifies clinically significant abnormalities and coordinates appropriate follow-up with study investigators and other clinicians. 7. Performs or coordinates study-related procedures, including phlebotomy, specimen collection, medication administration, and other protocol-specified clinical procedures within the APRN's scope of practice. 8. Provides appropriate clinical management, including prescribing medications or other treatments when required by the research protocol or necessary for participant safety and within the APRN's scope of practice. 9. Conducts or assists with informed consent procedures, including assessment of participant understanding and capacity to provide informed consent when appropriate. 10. Collaborates closely with principal investigators, study physicians, research nurses, coordinators, psychologists, pharmacists, and other members of multidisciplinary research teams to ensure participant safety and protocol adherence. 11. Supports recruitment, screening, enrollment, retention, and clinical assessment of research participants. 12. Maintains complete, accurate, and timely clinical and research documentation in accordance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice, IRB requirements, and applicable institutional and regulatory standards. 13. Demonstrates sound independent clinical judgment and promptly communicates significant clinical findings, protocol deviations, adverse events, and safety concerns to the appropriate study personnel.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Self-motivated with careful attention to details. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Organized and capable of handling multiple/diverse projects simultaneously.
2. Professionalism, maturity, good judgment, and ability to work with confidential material and protected health information.
3. High degree of computer literacy. Proven experience with clinical softwares.
4. Strong communication skills; written and verbal.
5. Understanding of clinical research processes and procedures from study start-up to study close out.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Master’s Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program or graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education. 2. CT APRN license (or eligible) with ANA certification OR CT PA license (or eligible). 3. Prescriptive privileges (or eligible) in the State of Connecticut, federal DEA license and CT DCP license for prescription of controlled substances.

Principal Responsibilities

 

1. Examines patients to collect information about their physical condition and establishes a clinical diagnosis. 2. Conducts physicals, provides treatment, formulates a health care plan and counsels patients on various health practices. 3. Encourages compliance with treatments plan through education, assessment of patient understanding and regular patient monitoring. 4. Provides reasonable and prudent medical care, practices appropriate management, and uses sound clinical judgment based on best practice standards and evidenced based medicine. 5. Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination. 6. Provides preventive health practices to patients to maintain and improve health and prevent illness. 7. Coordinates patient care including ordering of laboratory tests and radiographic studies. 8. Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal. 9. Prescribes therapy or medication as necessary. 10. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program or graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional slight lifting. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds when transferring a patient from chair or wheelchair to exam table and turning patients for examination. Proper body mechanics must be used when maneuvering patients.

Health Requirements

This role is a healthcare worker position. Healthcare workers (HCW) are defined as university employees working a healthcare setting who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to patients, human research subjects or infectious materials including body substance, contaminated medical supplies, devices and equipment, surfaces, or air.  HCW have specific health requirements that must be met prior to starting work, including MMR vaccine or immunity, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or immunity, TB screening, COVID vaccine according to University policy, hepatitis B vaccine or immunity, and annual flu vaccination.
