Overview
The Bankruptcy Officer manages a portfolio of consumer and/or commercial accounts involved in bankruptcy proceedings. The Bankruptcy Officer is responsible protecting the bank's interests while ensuring full compliance with the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and internal risk policies.

Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of consumer bankruptcies (Chapter 7 and 13) and commercial/business bankruptcies (Chapter 11 and 7), from filing through discharge, dismissal or plan completion
- Prepare, review and file proofs of claim, motions for relief from stay, objections to plans and other required court documentation within statutory deadlines
- Coordinate with outside bankruptcy counsel to ensure accurate representation of the institution's claims and timely court filings
- Analyze bankruptcy plans and reorganization proposals to assess financial impact and recommend appropriate action (objection, negotiation, or acceptance)
- Reconcile account balances, fees and payment histories to ensure accuracy of claims filed with the court
- Track case status and plan payments, escalating delinquencies or plan defaults as appropriate
- Ensure compliance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)/Regulation V (including Metro 2 reporting standards), U.S. Bankruptcy Code and internal policies
- Identify process improvement opportunities to reduce cycle times and losses associated with bankruptcy accounts
- Maintain detailed, audit-ready case files and documentation in the institution's imaging system
- Mentor assigned personnel on bankruptcy procedures and best practices as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or high school diploma (or equivalent) with equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 5 years of bankruptcy administration, default servicing or a related legal/financial experience
- Strong knowledge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code (Chapters 7, 11, and 13), FDCPA, FCRA/Regulation V, court e-filing platforms (e.g., PACER/CM-ECF), and relevant state and federal collection laws
- Strong knowledge of reviewing legal documents such as proofs of claim, motions and reorganization plans
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience engaging with outside counsel and trustees
- Proficiency with case management software for tracking case status and automating filing workflows, including LexisNexis Bankruptcy Management (Banko)
- Proficiency with loan servicing systems, case management software, and Microsoft Excel
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently
