POSITION PURPOSE
The Assistant Logistics Manager is responsible for supporting the overall management of the Transportation Department by overseeing the daily operations of the Feed and Shavings divisions while ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services. This position coordinates transportation schedules, supervises drivers and administrative processes, monitors Department of Transportation (DOT) and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) compliance, manages fleet-related administrative functions, and promotes continuous improvement in operational efficiency, cost control, and customer service. Working in partnership with the Logistics Division Manager, the Assistant Logistics Manager ensures that logistics operations consistently support the company's production, biosecurity, and business objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the daily transportation operations for the Feed and Shavings divisions to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient deliveries.
- Coordinate daily schedules, routes, and driver assignments to meet operational and customer needs.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving feed, shavings, transportation, and delivery issues with internal departments and external partners.
- Monitor and maintain biosecurity standards by ensuring transportation equipment is properly cleaned, disinfected, and documented.
- Collaborate with veterinarians, production teams, service technicians, feed mill personnel, and other departments to support operational continuity and disease prevention.
- Respond to changing operational conditions, including equipment failures, weather events, inventory shortages, and other transportation disruptions.
- Monitor transportation costs, route efficiency, and operational performance; identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
- Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Electronic Logging Device (ELD) requirements, Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, and company safety policies.
- Review driver inspections, in-cab camera footage, fuel usage, idle time, and fleet performance to promote safe driving practices and operational efficiency.
- Oversee transportation-related administrative functions, including credit card reconciliations, fuel reporting, repair invoice processing, and vendor documentation.
- Supervise, coach, and develop employees by providing performance feedback, mentoring, training, and disciplinary action as needed.
- Prepare, maintain, and distribute operational reports and transportation records to support management decision-making.
- Partner with Accounting and Operations to identify opportunities for cost reduction and continuous improvement across transportation and logistics functions.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Ensure the safe, timely, and cost-effective delivery of feed and shavings to company farms.
- Maintain compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT), Electronic Logging Device (ELD), Hours of Service (HOS), and company safety requirements.
- Promote a culture of safety, biosecurity, and regulatory compliance throughout transportation operations.
- Maximize fleet utilization while minimizing transportation costs, equipment downtime, and service disruptions.
- Ensure transportation equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and available to support operational needs.
- Monitor transportation performance metrics and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and service levels.
- Provide effective leadership by coaching, developing, and holding employees accountable for performance, attendance, and adherence to company policies.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of transportation records, reports, invoices, fuel reconciliations, and other required documentation.
- Foster strong working relationships with internal departments, vendors, and customers to support operational excellence.
- Assist the Logistics Manager in achieving departmental goals, maintaining service quality, and supporting overall logistics operations.
- Serve as the acting Logistics Manager in the Logistics Manager's absence
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Agriculture, Logistics, Transportation, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in logistics, transportation, fleet operations, agriculture, or a related operational environment.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience with responsibility for coaching, developing, and managing employee performance preferred.
- A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
- Working knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Hours of Service (HOS), Electronic Logging Device (ELD) requirements, and transportation safety standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook; experience with transportation management systems, ELD platforms, or fleet management software preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to train, coach, and evaluate employee performance.
- Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, weekends, and after-hours as needed.
- Must comply with all company biosecurity, animal welfare, and safety requirements.
