Position Summary...
What you'll do...
As a Software Engineer III, you will design and develop scalable backend solutions by collaborating with cross-functional teams including product management, frontend engineering, QA, and platform engineering. You will troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and deliver sustainable, high-quality software. This role involves owning end-to-end feature development, improving platform performance and reliability, driving engineering best practices, and contributing to automation initiatives. Your expertise will help build secure, scalable, and maintainable services that power Walmart's enterprise Business Intelligence platform while ensuring high standards of software quality and operational excellence.
About the Team
We build and maintain the Global Data Portal (GDP), Walmart's internal Business Intelligence platform delivering high-performance, scalable data solutions for users across the organization. Our platform powers dashboards, reporting, and analytics experiences used by thousands of associates across multiple business domains.
As part of the team, you'll build cloud-native backend services that process millions of API requests, integrate with multiple enterprise data platforms, and leverage modern technologies including Java, Spring Boot, Redis, GenAI, Kubernetes, and cloud-native microservices. We operate in a fast-moving Agile environment where reliability, scalability, automation, and engineering excellence are non-negotiable.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and Microservices while ensuring compliance with quality, security, and scalability standards.
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions with a strong focus on performance, maintainability, reliability, and extensibility.
- Build and enhance cloud-native services that power Walmart's enterprise Business Intelligence platform.
- Develop and optimize REST APIs, distributed services, and backend components supporting high-volume analytical workloads.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, frontend engineers, architects, and QA to deliver high-quality software.
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions to improve platform reliability.
- Optimize application performance through efficient caching strategies, database tuning, and code optimization.
- Implement automation, CI/CD improvements, telemetry, and observability to improve engineering productivity and operational excellence.
- Participate in design discussions, code reviews, sprint planning, testing, and Agile development activities.
- Monitor application health, evaluate change requests, and continuously improve system scalability, availability, and maintainability.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of hands-on software development experience using Java.
- Strong proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, Object-Oriented Programming, and backend application development.
- Experience designing and building REST APIs and microservices.
- Experience with Hibernate/JPA, Redis, and SQL databases.
- Hands-on experience working with Kubernetes, Docker, or other containerized environments.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and modern software engineering practices.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex production issues.
- Experience optimizing application performance and identifying system bottlenecks.
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
- Ability to translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.
- Experience working in Agile teams and collaborating effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.
- A strong automation mindset—you look at manual processes and ask, "Why isn't this automated?"
